NEIL YOUNG: LIFE IN WAR

As Harp Magazine reports today Neil Young has announced a new album... and it's already finished!

The news that Neil Young has a complete album in the bag shocked all of us at JamBase. On the heels of his very successful 2005 release, Prairie Wind and with his award-winning documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold in theatres now, no one saw this coming.

Filmmaker Jonathan Demme (who filmed Neil Young: Heart of Gold) recently sent an email stating; "Neil just finished writing and recording – with no warning – a new album called Life in War. It all happened in three days."

Young has long worked under the "strike while the iron is hot" mentality, often working in creative spurts and never forcing it. Well, it seems the iron must have been burning bright for him to create a complete album in three days!

As Katherine Silkaitis at Harp reported, Demme went on to say, "It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq... Truly mind blowing. Will be in stores soon."

Details are sketchy at best, but the featured song, "Impeach the President" contains Bush's voice accompanied by a choir chanting "flip/flop."

Stay tuned as JamBase will be sure to report as details unfold.

1. I hope Neil Young inspires all the older musicians to get their
groove on regarding the travesty that's happening in our country. BTW, Neil Young was the star of the first concert I ever went to!
I look forward to hearing this!

4. What happened to them, anyway?
Except for a couple I can think of (Joan Baez and Steve Earle--does Tommy Smothers count?) not many politically active musicians from the 60s have been speaking up lately.

13. I wish I knew; why the complacence?
Too rich or old/tired, and don't want to borrow trouble? Perhaps some leaders, like Neil, will make or encourage them to follow.

Springsteen is a bit younger, but I give him props for trying during '04.

40. Carole King
Carole King toured the country and spoke out against the Bush regime before the last election. I met her at the Democratic home office in Concord, New Hampshire. I'll never forget what she said, "Look out, they're coming for us. We've got to beat them." It was great to see her in person, as I used to sing her songs (at home) when I was in high school.

We saw her here in Iowa - warmed up the crowd prior to a John Edwards appearance. James Taylor was also out there working for the cause.

60. It is not complacency. They can't get any air time.
All of the radio stations are owned by about six coporations. I saw Prince a few years ago and he did a 10 min. rant on this. They won't play the music.

He hit in the late 70s, about 10 - 15 years later than Neil Young.

54. Peter, Paul, and Mary still show up, bless their hearts, and...
Pete Seeger's still recording I think, but he's pretty ancient to be touring at this point.

They are all faithful to the dream.

As far as I can tell from the postings here, songs ARE being written and recorded -- but you could never tell that from listening to "Clean Channel" stations.

Whenever someone posts lyrics or links to new protest songs, I tend to paste them to my files (can't actually listen to most of them due to an old computer, though I did get to hear Secret Agent Plame) -- so I know they're out there.

What do you think of the idea of Air America giving protest songs some air time? I'd love it -- it'd give me one more reason to tune in while I drive, and a way to decide if I want to hunt up a CD by an artist I don't already know.

Hekate

Neil pilloried GHWB in "Rockin' in the Free World"

"We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man.
We got a kinder, gentler machine gun hand"

Let's hope the new song skewers Shrubyah just as well.

36. A parable.
While recording the David Foster arranged "Northern Lights" single, "Tears Are Not Enough", (Canada's contribution to "Milk-It-For-Everything-It's-Worth-AID"), Neil sang his bit in standard Neil falsetto;

"Alll our innocence is lawww-awwwsttt..."

Production ground to a halt.

Foster, over the headphones says to Neil, "Uh, Neil, that was a little flat..."

Neil responded, "That's my sound, man..."

Production continued.

------------------------

Most Neil-haters hate the sound of his guitar scratching their eardrums, as I hate the sound of nails on a chalk-board.

Even Joe Satriani has said, "Young goes for an emotion, or a feel, and he nails it every time."

Satriani knows what it is, he is talking about.

------------------------

No Doors, no Led Zep. If you wish to spite me, play your Stryper records at full volume, I'll be dusting off Neil's Fender Deluxe.

;)

Speaking of amps I just picked up one of the sweetest new "OLD" amps made available by new tube tech, the VOX 50 amp with the best of many amps all rolled into one, if I'd had this amp 20 years ago I'd be in the scene now like a big dog :)

It's sweet.

18. In the initial weeks after September 11, Young spoke favorably about. . .
the Patriot Act, and made a statement at a PFAW dinner in his honor that "to protect freedom it seems that we're going to have to relinquish some of our freedoms for a short period of time."

Since then, he seems to have reneged those beliefs, at least within the lyrics of his most recent work.

It was a tribute to the victims of 9/11, not a call to blow up Arabs indiscriminately. The public certainly agreed with the sentiments of "Let's Roll", given the amount of airplay it received.

I'm as big a NY fan as there is. Love the guy! But he has put out some of the biggest piles of steaming turds ever to be committed to tape. Artistically, that's cool. I've sure done some stinker cartoons and paintings in my time, but we judge him by the body of his work. He's been wildly inconsistent at different perionds in his career, but he in generally great, and a true music Icon.

it fits Beethoven, too.

And I'd say the same thing about him.

I'm doing positive overviews these days. I round the edges of thoughtful people with inspiring career trajectories.

Then I save the bile and contempt for Jesse Helms, Pat Robertson, and other menaces to mind and heart.

(I hear ya on the inconsistencies. But Jesus, some of those songs are exquisite.)

I said the same thing you did! But your post was entitled "Can't go wrong with Mr. Young," and I think we both agree...you can go horribly wrong at times! Can you say "Landing on Water?" I wasn't doing "bile and contempt." I love Neil Young and have sent many a dollar his way through concert tickets and disc purchases over our mutual lifespans. I wasn't commenting on Neil as much as I was your "can't go wrong" subj line!

21. No, no. I meant MY bile and contempt for Rethugs. 'Was not drawing
a connection to you at all.

One of these days we may cross paths at a Neil Young concert. I hope his health is sturdy enough for him to keep recording and touring.

The other night I heard "Needle & the Damage Done" and was reminded of how the man can put a song into a guitar and then carve it into my memory. Just remarkable the way he does that.

And I do have one recommendation, even though it doesn't sound right. I swear -- it is a real thing: On Emmylou Harris' LP, LIGHT OF THE STABLE, a Christmas album (I'm not kidding), Emmylou, Neil Young, and Dolly Parton sing the title track. It is a splendid, splendid moment in studio recording. Not the sort of piece I'd normally cotton onto, but these 3 make it happen.

Vote Fraud in Ohio

Lost ballots and Diebold's counting
We're finally on our own
This winter I hear Bush laughing
Vote Fraud in Ohio

Gotta get real ballots
Paperless taking us down
Should have been done long ago
Keep blacks from voting and
TV won't make a sound
Kerry won, but he said no.

I'm just old enough to remember the anti-war songs of the 60's and have wondered when they'd resurface with some new ones to spur the anti-Bush movement.

I'm buying mine in a place where the sale will be counted: In a real store. Everyone buy a legal copy so it will be counted.

Here are a few newer things I found early on after the 2000 selection:

From John McCutcheon, most appropriately, "The list." A song about protest music banned from Clear Channel. Also, "Hail to the Chief."

http://www.folkmusic.com/f_music.htm

From Hugh Blumenfeld, "Mr. Jeckyll & Dr. Hyde," complete with songs about social issues, "shadow governments," etc...

http://home.earthlink.net/~h2jukebox/mjdh.html

Of course, there was Paula Cole's savage "My hero, Mr. President," and John Mellencamp's "To Washington."

I thought Neil Young's "Greendale," while not protest music, referenced the current social climate pretty obviously.

There were more, lots of new stuff from new, unknown people that mainly self-produced and marketed their stuff. Hard to hear about, since it's never played on the radio!

44. Shit, when I first heard the LP "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"
in 71 or 72, with Neil and Crazy Horse, I went out and bought a new turntable. The old one was dead and I had to buy that album.

Hello cowgirl in the sand......

48. 2nd piece of Neil news for me today.
He'll be in concert here (winnipeg, one of his homey towns) this summer!! yippppeeee. I gather it's a make up thingie for his missing the Juno's because of his illness.

Crosby Stills and Nash to accompany him (? oooo, if they do What It's Worth, ooooooo), I believe. Dunno for sure, sis just called me up with this news, haven't seen any print or anything on it.

always liked that raggamuffin.

Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'.
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drummin'.
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it.
Soldiers are cutting us down.
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.

62. See "Heart of Gold" on the big screen if you can
it is so worth it, renting the DVD later won't compare. It was like being in concert with him, plus some. Neil to finish another album so soon after Prairie Wind, and his brain aneurysm is just amazing. Big kick for Neil.

65. NEEEEEEILL!!
Way to go, buddy!

I still remember him playing in Dallas with Sonic Youth as his opening act. Most of the people there just couldn't get it and booed SY at the end of their set. I thought it was pure genius on Neil's part to bring them along.

83. Neil Young has been all over the place, politically
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 06:25 PM by brentspeak
He was sort of a hippie in the early 70's. Was very anti-nukes in the late 70's. For a time in the early 80's, he was a Reagan supporter. Then he changed his mind about Reagan's America, and recorded "Rockin' In the Free World". He's always been a big part of Farm Aid. In the past few years, he's really turned against Bush (though I don't think he was much of a Bush fan to start with).

NY's not really liberal or conservative - more like a passionate populist.

86. Neil Young - Always was my favorite Canadian.
I've seen him live 12 times and the last 5 times I saw him, his shows were filled imagery of BFEE crimes, the suppression of free speech by Clear Channel and the destruction to the environment.

87. Neil Young has been a long time favorite.
From bad old Nixon times.

Also some of his songs are on k.d. lang's CD: "Hymns Of The 49th Parallel"

Now Springsteen is about to release a new album, "We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions" April 25.

It's beginning to look a lot like the 60's 70's in terms of artistic involvement in the issues of the times.
