Racism still on redneck radio
As I'm driving home from work today, I'm flipping through various radio stations as I always do. I stop at this country station and they are playing Ray Stevens' Ahab the Arab. I know that song was supposed to be comedy back in the day, but I think it is completely racist to play that song in 2006 while our troops are dying in Iraq.

Am I wrong?

1. Tasteless then and even more so now...
I think for many, it's doing without thinking. They'd call it harmless fun.

2. No, you're definitely not wrong.
During the first Gulf War, two favorite songs among troops in the Gulf were The Clash's "Rock the Casbah" and The Cure's "Killing and Arab." Never mind that both songs are clearly meant to be ironic commentaries on misguided Western views (and, in the Clash's case, the influence of oil money on Middle Eastern culture), the troops (many of whom think irony is something that gets wrinkles out of a shirt) took them at face value.

I suppose it's similar to the way Ronnie Reagan took "Born in the USA" at face value and used it to whip up party support for patriotic values.

7. Yeah, it's just entertainment.
So let's bring back Steppin' Fetchit and the Black and White minstrels and start singing about the cotton down in Ol' Alabamy again, shall we?

It's all entertainment. For somebody.

6. Racism is a fundamental, unspoken component of why so many
rednecks vote GOP. I can't count the number of dumbass country fried morons that vote GOP because they think that "them" people don't work and get welfare. The leaders in the GOP have beat that drum constantly with code words since LBJ and the civil rights movement.

8. It's odd...
Every time I see the letters GOP, I have this strange, uncontrollable urge to urinate.
