Tornadoes Rip Through Eastern Iowa; 1 Dead

-snip-

At the University of Iowa, which the National Weather Service said was hit by one tornado, students were assessing the damage, including downed trees.

Andrew Loffswold fled his apartment when he heard the howling winds of an oncoming twister grow louder. When he returned, his second-story apartment was in shambles, its roof torn off and its contents turned upside down.

``I'm just trying to salvage anything I can,'' said Loffswold, a 19-year-old student from Sioux City.

Nine other nearby apartments suffered major damage.

University spokesman Steve Parrott said classes have been canceled for Friday while crews repair the campus and clear debris.

4. We caught the northern edge of that storm in Southern WI as it went by
When the front first hit, we had marble to golfball sized hail for about 5-10 minutes. Noisy as hell!

Bad, bad storm.

6. This tornado season has been abnormally large.
We've already had twice as many for an average April and we're only half way through...

And there was a crazy storm that passed over last night (Indiana). We've had a bunch this year.

13. Mine too. In an article, it mentioned how power lines were down all over
so some firefighters, going to check on them, told some students to block off a road. The students did the only logical thing - they drug their couches into the street to block traffic. LOL.

14. Cried a bit when I saw pics of this today and last night...
I'd lived there for around 7 years or so before moving to California. I'm guessing that an apartment building or two I lived in close to downtown might have gotten trashed... My friends are OK, but in addition to the tornados, they had a lot of lightning on the outskirts of the city, and two houses near my friends both had big house fires and one burned down.

15. Many of my favorite places were damaged.
Luckily the university itself and the old historical buildings (save for St. Patrick's church) were unscathed. Downtown will need a lot of rebuilding though. I may go over there after Easter break to see how I can help out.
