I don't get it: one thing in which freepers and liberals agree.... |
|
for the most part,
WE BOTH LOVE SOUTH PARK.
I know SP is an equal opportunity offender, but I really do see the creators as leaning left (not "libertarian left" either). What I see is that they mostly ridicule adults and politics in general more than anything else. Maybe it's the Sadaam as Satan's lover thing they like? And they don't seem to be offended by the portrayal of Jesus as modern talk show host, or of Mel Gibson as S&M scat bottom.
Any thoughts as to why we can find common ground here, but nowhere else? I guess I'll have to resign myself to the fact that the show is JUST THAT FUNNY!

1. Wednesday's show had Jesus taking a dump on Bush and the flag |

Wish I had seen THAT. Evidently, they were told they couldn't make fun of Mohammed so they found the most offensive thing they could think of.

Really offensive depictions of some characters are ok, moderate depictions of another cause executives to fear violence and ban it.
On the other hand, it blows the rhetoric of those offended by moderate depictions of their particular guy out of the water. "Depictions of *all* prophets are offensive, we would treat offensive cartoons of Isa or Moses just like we do unjust depictions of Muhammed."
It's one thing for a group to appeal for support from others that might regard having their 'prophets' offended. It's another when the group that did the appealing shows they don't give a s**t for either their word or others'.
South Park showed that Comedy Central has to grow a pair.
And, among other things, South Park showed that all those Muslims so solicitous of how Jesus and Moses are represented just plain out-and-out lied.
On edit: Since words like "all" can only be used in positive statements about some sects, let me rephrase: "... all those Muslims so solicitous of how Jesus and Moses are represented just plain out-and-out lied, or now have a marvellous opportunity to show that they're not liars and speak up." (On the other hand, most Xians will limit their criticism to either the occasional quip, or hear about it in church.)

Many repubs, especially jobless/underpayed/poor ones - and there are a lot of those, prefer "nationalized"/universal healthcare. Many do distrust the state, though not necessarily for the same reasons that the Left distrusts the state.
