It's horrifying
I came into DU tonight after a positive and productive day. My first order of business, as usual, was to peruse LBN. The headines are horrifying on their own, collectively they are beyond the pale:

Pope Uses Easter To Attack Gay Families
(Vatican City) In marking the Stations of the Cross during Good Friday observances in Rome Pope Benedict XVI called for the "filth" the surrounds society to be cleansed and said the world is in the grip of "a diabolical pride aimed at eliminating the family".

"Lord, we have lost our sense of sin," he said. "Today a slick campaign of propaganda is spreading an inane apologia of evil, a senseless cult of Satan, a mindless desire for transgression, a dishonest and frivolous freedom, exalting impulsiveness, immorality and selfishness as if they were new heights of sophistication.”

Although the Pontiff did not specifically name same-sex relationships the message was clear, less than a week after Italian voters elected a leftist government committed to recognizing gay and lesbian couples.

In a much publicized event less than two weeks before the election the pope used a meeting with the conservative coalition to launch an attack on the leftists for their support of a domestic partner law.

"Attempts to make juridically equivalent to radically different forms of unions which in reality harm it and contribute to its destabilization," the pope declared. (story)
...
Although was his first public comment on same-sex marriage since becoming Pope, Benedict had long history of attacking same-sex unions.

As Cardinal Ratzinger he was the Vatican's most outspoken opponent of gay marriage.

IRAQ:
Baghdad Morgue Overflowing Daily
Dahr Jamail and Arkan Hamed

BAGHDAD, Apr 14 (IPS) - As sectarian killings continue to rise in Iraq, the central morgue in Baghdad is unable to keep up with the daily influx of bodies.

The morgue is receiving a minimum of 60 bodies a day and sometimes more than 100, a morgue employee told IPS on condition of anonymity.

"The average is probably over 85," said the employee on the morning of April 12, as scores of family members waited outside the building to see if their loved ones were among the dead.

The family of a man named Ashraf who had been taken away by the Iraqi police Feb. 16 anxiously searched through digital photographs inside the morgue. He then found what he was looking for.

"His two sons were killed when Ashraf was taken," said his uncle, 50-year-old Aziz. "Ashraf was a bricklayer who was simply trying to do his job, and now we see what has become of him in our new democracy."

1. It's overwhelming, isn't it?
I just want to crawl into bed and
pull the covers over my head.
I think I have hit my "water-loo,"
so to speak.
I simply can't deal with it all anymore.

3. Normally, I can be forgiving of one's regretful past...
but reading this pope's words makes me wonder just how much he truly does regret it.

I have to agree with you.

5. With all due apologies to observant Catholics... Ratzinger is--
and always will be--an alumnus of the Nazi Youth.... I have to think he has not parted with some of those philosophies put forth by the 3rd Reich. I was appalled that he was named and remember colleagues sitting in a break room watching the announcement of his being named to the Papacy on tv. The words, "but isn't he a former Nazi youth?" came tumbling out of me and sort of were left to "thud" metaphorically around the room, which included several practicing Catholics.

Well, I'm sorry. But people do not often change so much, so as to leave all their past behind...

I will never observe this Pope. Ratzinger is the only name I will call him.

I'm sorry if I'm offending anybody, but he just creeps me out. But who knows, maybe he was just talking about Fox News. "Today a slick campaign of propaganda is spreading an inane apologia of evil..."

Adding a creepy photo for effect:
