Blogger makes the big time
This is cool--there's a front page story on today's Washington Post about blogger Maryscott O'Connor of My Left Wing.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/14/AR2006041401648.html

Here's her writeup about how the article came about

4. Actually this is not cool

Imagine how this reads to anyone not in the leftmost 10%. I am embarrassed to read this. I absolutely believe the Bush administration has totally destroyed our country's reputation in the world and has preverted its values. The problem I have is that you will only turn people off over stating the awful reality - why call Cheney Satan - when you could instead list unconsionable things he's done.

Articles like this make people in the middle reject the entire left.

7. I agree
We on the far left appreciate this kind of stuff because we are "angry" and "leftist", but yes, the majority of America is much more moderate. They're less likely to give credibility to anything we say when it's presented like that...good thinking.

11. I'm not so sure about that....
Three years ago I would have agreed with you. But today I
believe a growing number of 'silent majority' Americans
who may have once bought Rove's 'angry wacko liberals' talking
point have over time have come to relate to what that anger is all about.

Gingrich sees it:
"What they are going to try to do, what they should do,
is say nothing except: 'Had enough?'"

5. Sucks!
I didn't bother to count how many times the words "angry" and "left" were written (much less juxtaposed), but it certainly isn't a puff piece on this blogger... au contraire. It's just another right-wing slam at those "wild-eyed, angry, idiot(ic), democrat(ic) libruls".

Like I say.. it SUCKS! :puke:

9. Look at the quite strategically chosen photo...
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 08:58 AM by Flubadubya
Look at that wild-eyed, crazy-with-anger, dressed-out New Age, Merlot-sipping, neo-Hippy, cigarette-smoking, left wing nutjob. They didn't have to write a single word. The picture says all these things to the "mainstream audience" and that was the intention. This just gets worse everytime I think about it! :grr:

10. This hit piece is part of the Post's crusade to marginalize blogs
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 09:28 AM by Rose Siding
They could have chosen to highlight some of her more studied pieces -Are there any? this article doesn't leave that impression. If not, he could have written about Greewald or Marshall or Hamsher or Bowers or Rozen or Cole.

This is a very unflattering profile. One horrid example:

The front door opens and in comes her 6-year-old son, Terry, home from school, who starts batting around a blue balloon at the other end of the living room, batting it closer to her, closer, closer. She searches through her iTunes library until she finds one of her favorite downloads -- not music, but a speech by a character named Howard Beale in the movie "Network." She presses "play" and turns up the volume. "I want you to get mad!" Beale shouts at one point. "I want you to get mad!" she shouts along, startling Terry. "What?" he says, backing away with his balloon.

Gasp! The "message" seems to be: Those lefties are so out of control they scare their own kids!

And the mention of Rude Pundit doesn't indicate at all that his hook -his gimmick- is being on-the-edge crazed. That's not as typical as the impression given in the article.

Selectivly quoting the anger is a freep trick. This is a hit job.
