THE IGNORED AND DISCOUNTED

I would like to tell you about some people who are often treated as if they do not exist. While they flourish as citizens and are active in our churches across the nation, it is as if they lack reality as far as the so-called mainstream media are concerned.

These people are former homosexuals, sometimes known as ex gays, who have prevailed over their previous existence.

I imagine they are the most politically-incorrect people in our nation.

They do exist, though, and there are untold thousands of them.

But when former homosexuals are depicted on the networks, they are typically unhappy or anxious to return to their former lives. On NBC’s “Law and Order: SVU,” an ex-gay man returns to his former lifestyles but murders another gay man to hide his backslide. On NBC’s “Will & Grace,” a meeting of former homosexuals ends with everyone present running off with a same-sex member of the group.

So you see, when these individuals are not being completely ignored, they are being demeaned and put down by those who argue that one cannot overcome homosexuality.

Ex-gay ministries attempt to reach homosexuals with the Gospel of Christ so that they can find fulfillment in Him. Former homosexuals learn to overcome their same-sex attractions and often marry and have children.

I am proud to know several former homosexuals. It is thrilling to see them joyously living out their lives. I have actually had the privilege of working with a few individuals who have turned their backs on homosexuality so that they can live fully in Christ.

I actually addressed a rally of ex-gays last year and can tell you that they are living out their faith as fearlessly as any group of people I have seen in quite some time. It is a great pleasure to see people discover true peace, true purpose in Christ.

This isn’t a popular notion, by any means. But it is imperative that the Church of Jesus Christ boldly confront the issues of homosexuality and the power of Christ to enable change.

As Stephen Bennett says, “Jesus never tolerated sin. He confronted it – in love.”

Stephen lived the homosexual lifestyle until he was 28. And then he gave his life to Jesus Christ. Today, 16 years later, he is happily married, the father of two, and one of the nation’s most courageous spokesmen on overcoming homosexuality through Christ. You can learn more about his story at: www.sbministries.org

NEW EDUCATION EFFORT

This week, the Orlando, Fla.-based Liberty Counsel and Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) kicked off their “Change is Possible Campaign.” Liberty Counsel, an affiliate ministry of Liberty University, is a national public interest law firm with offices in Florida and Virginia and hundreds of affiliate attorneys in all 50 states. PFOX is a national organization that supports families touched by homosexuality, advocates for the ex-gay community and educates the public on sexual orientation.

Mat Staver, founder and president of Liberty Counsel, says that in the past several years, as “tolerance” and “diversity” have become popular buzzwords, there has been a corresponding increase in discrimination and intolerance toward those who have made the decision to leave homosexuality. He says that former homosexuals have lost their jobs and been physically assaulted because they dared to tell others that people can and do overcome same-sex attractions.

The two groups are targeting our nation’s public schools, many of which have become sectors for promoting homosexual teachings. Mr. Staver says that in many public schools, staff display “Safe-Zone” stickers with pink triangles, and schools hold diversity days to present the message that people are “born gay,” but schools consistently exclude the message that people can, and have chosen, to change.

In a recent case, a “diversity day” was actually cancelled instead of allowing former homosexuals to attend the school event. That’s how adamant many school officials are about homosexuality.

Mr. Staver said, “We are confident that this project will help root out intolerance that exists under the guise of tolerance and diversity. There is an ongoing battle over the hearts and minds of our youth. We have an obligation to protect them from the harmful message that people are ‘born gay’ and cannot choose to change.”

In the face of incredible opposition, former homosexuals are declaring to the world that there is hope for change. They are living proof of it, even though, as I earlier noted, they are often treated as if they do not exist. I encourage pastors across this nation to invite people like Stephen Bennett to their churches to confront this modern-day cultural phenomenon. We must address this issue head-on and educate people that there change is possible and real.

1. That's because self-hating, sexually repressed people
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 10:28 AM by boobooday
In the throes of authoritarian, controlling, dogmatic organizations seldom have a positive message to convey.

(The reason why we don't want to spread the gospel of Falwell's "ex-gays")

2. Probably are quite a lot of them ex-gays...
...that can usually be found hanging out parks and men's bathrooms and chatrooms cruising for anonymous sex.

My understanding is the "success" rate is not really anything to crow about and that quite a lot of them just hide their sexual activities a bit deeper than the average closet.

4. The biggest organization of these frauds was "Exodus"
and the two founders ended up running off with each other.

That tells you all you need to know about "ex-gays."

7. The 'ex-gay" movement is nothing more than a scam
Its success rate is below 5%.

And that incident from "Exodus" does indeed tell you all you need to know about this pathetic fraud.

6. You know who else you don't hear from?
Former fundamentalists. You never hear from people who suddenly realize that the extremist group they're a part of is more about hate than Jesus; it's leaders more about pride and wealth than meekness and poverty.

You never hear from the reformed fundamentalists. I'll bet they have some interesting insights- perhaps Falwell should highlight them.

8. I salute the Rev. Falwell and wish him luck on his sacred mission
I only hope that soon we can support these programs with our tax dollars.

This is where faith-based programs are headed. When they are the law of the land, we'll be able to send school kids to these "therapists" over and above the wishes of their parents.
I 've seen interviews with people who debunk these efforts after going through them. What I have not seen is anyone say what I have been waiting for: that these programs are abusive and violent. It's only a matter of time.

9. "Homosexuals learn to overcome their same-sex attractions ..."
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 10:44 AM by Akoto
... So that they can go on to live as bitter, closeted, self-hating people who must rise every day and wear a mask to please bigots.

If Christ is the loving guy they want us to believe he is, then I doubt he would spit on his children over sexual orientation. Condemning souls to eternal damnation for things that the "divine power" of his heritage made possible seems ... I don't know, petty? Malicious, even?

In any case, I am one straight male who is not intimidated by people of different sexual orientations. Live your lives as you want to and don't give these hatemongers the attention they so crave.

10. Why is it Falwell always talks about our public schools, "many of which
have become sectors for promoting homosexual teachings," when so far as I know, neither he nor anyone from his hate group can name any of these alleged schools or what exactly is being taught to "promote the so-called gay life style?"

Things that make you go hmmmm.

Or in my case, things that make me go :argh:

12. Anyone really wonder why the Republican Party became a party of homophobic
theocratic fascists? Look who their savior is...the one who outspent Scaife guiding and bringing them to power. Without Moon and his fronts the Republicans would still be... well, Republicans! - Remember when they weren't the party of homophobes and theocrats?

These are taken from Moon's Russian propaganda videos.

http://www.freedomofmind.com/stevehassan/presskit/articles/parry1.htm

On Jan. 28, 1995, a beaming Rev. Jerry Falwell told his Good Time Gospel Hour congregation news that seemed heaven sent. The televangelist hailed two Virginia businessmen as financial saviors of debt-ridden Liberty University, the fundamentalist Christian school that Falwell had made the crown jewel of his Religious Right empire.

"They had to borrow money, hock their houses, hock everything," enthused Falwell. "Thank God for friends like Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas." Falwell's congregation rose as one to applaud. The star of the moment was Daniel Reber, who was standing behind Falwell. Thomas was not present.

Reber and Thomas earned Falwell's public gratitude by excusing the Lynchburg, Va., school of about one-half of its $73 million debt. In the late 1980s, that flood of red ink had forced Falwell to abandon his Moral Majority political organization and nearly drowned Liberty University in bankruptcy.

Reber and Thomas came to Falwell's rescue in the nick of time. Their non-profit Christian Heritage Foundation of Forest, Va., snapped up a big chunk of Liberty's debt for $2.5 million, a fraction of its face value. Thousands of small religious investors who had bought church construction bonds through a Texas company were the big losers. But Falwell shed no tears. He told local reporters that the moment was "the greatest single day of financial advantage" in the school's history.

Left unmentioned in the happy sermon was the identity of the bigger guardian angel who had been protecting Falwell's financial interests -- from a distance and without publicity. That secret benefactor was the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed South Korean messiah who is controversial with many fundamentalist Christians because of his bizarre Biblical interpretations and his brainwashing tactics that have torn thousands of young people from their families. Moon also has grown harshly anti-American in recent years.

Covertly, Moon helped bail out Liberty University through one of his front groups which funnelled $3.5 million to the Reber-Thomas Christian Heritage Foundation, the non-profit that had purchased the school's debt.

Here's a link to Jerry's buddy, LaHaye's letter to Moon's political operative talking about trying to get Falwell elected president in 1988. Funny, we might as well have Falwell in the WH now. Same thing. I don't think Jerry or LaHaye ever read John 5:43.

There is a reason this is happening to our nation. It is not the product of the free market of ideas nor any democratic process.

Moon is winning and isn't even close.

16. How come Falwell didn't mention ex-heterosexuals and ex-ex gays?
Why is it that his con artist organization tries to keep these people hidden, who are most certainly much more larger in number than the ex-gays-for-pay?

17. I had a friend who kept fighting his homosexuality. It was either
Jesus or his sexual orientation. You could tell by his demeanor which side was prevailing. When he wasn't trying to be a straight Christian, he was normal, happy and carefree as a mid twenty year old in a time of war and the draft, but when he swung the other way, he would be sullen and judgmental. the guy really tried to become straight. He finally picked up his belongings, jumped into his VW and moved to San Francisco. Never heard from him again. I wish him well. I hope those demons of self denial have left him for good.
