My dad came back yesterday from his Katrina trip
This past weekend my dad went with a group from our church to an area around the New Orleans area to help clean up. Apparently it was a good trip and they got home around 2:30am est instead of leaving later that Sunday morning. Thanks for those of you who remembered him and the group in your thoughts and/or prayers. :) The local news even featured the group who went to New Orleans (my dad went around the area).

4. Yeah, it just baffles me how little we are hearing . . .
. . . about the worst hurricane disaster in over a hundred years.

Did your dad get a sense of FEMA even doing anything constructive, or just getting in the way of workers and survivors?

I applaud his efforts. Sounds like something my dad would have done in his younger days.

7. I'm not sure
There was another group who went to New Orleans and they had pics and things are still pretty bad down there. This one guy went down there (a bit younger than me) and he was totally covered in black suit. They didn't go directly to New Orleans I don't think. I think they went around the area around the Mississippi/Tennessee line. They worked with a group from Memphis that was featured in the news since Laura Bush visited them to thank them for their efforts in cleaning and helping.

5. from what I'm hearing....
...I live in P'cola, FL, and some of my neighbors are displaced Katrina victims who go 'home' at times, it's again a case of neighbor helping neighbor. Some FEMA presence (not much) and alot of charitable organizations helping out.

Let's face it. The 'federal' emergency response system is broken. Period. We only have the states and charitable (overwhelmingly evangelical christians - they really do care and do provide help) organizations who are providing assistance.

Bush managed to gut federal assistance to shove fed$$$ at 'faith-based' orgs.

The faith-based help comes with a cost. Accept Jeebus as your lord and saviour or do without.

Sickening, in the land of the free and home of the brave.

9. Or group isn't like that though
Our group isn't there to minister religion to them. We're there to help pure and simple with cleaning up. I can't speak for other groups going there but ours aren't that way. There's a time and place for ministering with religious purposes. It's sad how the Bush administration has just abandoned them. :(
