You know when You are REALLY in a hurry in the checkout lane?
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 08:46 PM by Ripley
And some old man in worn out shoes is hunched over in front of you in the express lane buying one item and he is slow as molasses and counting out his god damned pennies?

Well, HELL. That seems to happen to me once a week anymore.

And DAMN. If every time I don't listen to the cashier and find out what he needs and hand her the dollar or so, to pay his bill. Just to move him along.

The cashier rolls her eyes. The folks in line gasp disapprovingly. The old fart mumbles and shuffles along.

I am not rich.

But I'm in a hurry. So it's a good thing I had a spare buck to get his ass outa the way, again.

Wonder if this could become a trend?
Wonder why people look at me like I am crazy to do that for a complete stranger.
Wonder why no one gives a shit.

Oh yeah. Bushworld.

:sarcasm:

As if I needed to point out that this is absurd. Of COURSE a normal person would help out someone in such dire straits. Who doesn't have 50 cents in their pocket to help an old poor person. Yet, in this day in age most people are happy to let him walk away without his milk. That is the sarcastic point I was trying to make. But somehow, here on Witchhunt DU, I am considered rude because yall have fallen under the spell of a clever troll.

Wow.

THE BIG EDIT IS HERE. Well now, isn't this an interesting social experiment. I suppose most of yall replying do not know me, therefore do not know I tend to be sarcastic by nature here. The jist of my post was the sadness that so many elderly people have to count pennies and are understandably slow in this world of people where so many seem to have ADD. I have never been rude to an elderly person in line, or elsewhere. I DO pay their bill because they clearly need that little amount, that I can afford. The world that we are in right now, BUSHWORLD, is cold and mean. I am not. I made a sarcastic post because I felt like it. Sorry so many of you were offended. My intention was to point out the lack of concern by the cashiers, the distaste of the others in line (who really ARE in a hurry - I'm usually okay with waiting on people who are slow for obvious reasons) and the utter desperate state that our country is in. When so many old folks (old farts - as my relatives over 70 PREFER to be called) are in such bad shape that they count coins to get one or two items. Something IS WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY.

But hey, if You feel better attacking me because one person started the ball. Well, that's your choice.

1. I do that
I just assume he's counting his pennies because he's really as broke as he looks, and I'll flip the difference - but don't make a big deal about it because he/she shouldn't be totally robbed of their dignity just so people with poor planning skills can get through a line faster.

5. No one respects the elderly anymore.
It is shocking to me to see little old ladies have doors dropped on them. Hell, I even hold doors open for young ugly men because it's common courtesy.

NO MANNERS EXIST under Bushrule.

21. You sure don't
Calling someone "an old fart" and waving dollar bills.

Your caper just blew up in your face here, and you really should stop doing that stuff. You're disrespectful and rude, and that, my friend, has nothing to do with George W. Bush.

It's about you.

2. I'm old, and you're rude
I don't care how much of a hurry you're in, you can stand a few seconds while the customer in front of you - and I don't care if it's a kid counting out change for a candy bar or a senior citizen carefully counting out the exact change - while the customer who was there before you completes his or her transaction. He's entitled to as much time as he needs, and you're required to wait.

Your proferring of the dollar is rude and demanding, and if you were to do that to me while I was counting out change to pay for my purchases, I'd let you know in terms very much like these right here that your only job is to stand there, behave, be quiet, and wait your turn.

Oh, and put that dollar away. You look like a total asshole, waving it around like that.

a few minutes for an old man with arthritic fingers who is probably fighting to maintain his independence to count out some change? Just what is so all fired important that you can't wait a minute or two for somebody else?

If you are very, very lucky that old man with the clumsy fingers and the pocket full of change will be you some day. Just how are you going to feel when some impatient clod sneers and throws a dollar bill at the checker to get rid of you?

Shame.

It actually brings tears to my eyes to think about how some people can be so inconsiderate and impatient in that situation. That old guy will be most of us some day.

Or perhaps another way to think of it is if you go to the store with an elderly parent--and they take their time carefully finding the change they need in their purse or coin purse--they may be sick, or even dying ..they deserve some respect.. They want to do it themselves--so you don't help until you really have to--it is heartbreaking...

One day you are going to be that old person in line and lets hope that the person behind you has more patience than you do. I work in retail and older people are many times lonely and living on a very fixed income so they count every penny. Have a little patience and if you are in that much of a hurry don't go to the freaking store because the world does not revolve around your schedule.

22. "To get his ass out of the way"? You are the antithesis of charitable.
You write of this as though you are some long-suffering saint of something. You are the one who doesn't give a shit about anyone or anything but yourself and your immediate gratification. Yes, it is frustrating, especially when they may spill all of their change and have to pick it up. But you are indeed rude and hurtful and insulting to throw your dollar bill down. You are not helping them out financially; you are ridiculing them for being old and slow. They are, to you, in your own despicable words, nothing more than a mumbling, shuffling old fart in worn out shoes. Shame on you for your inhumane and selfish opinions and behaviors.

You are so young and energetic you should be able to organize your life so that you are not in such a desperate hurry in the checkout line.

Again, it cannot be said strongly enough, SHAME ON YOU!

36. Nice try, but you dropped the ball
That's not sarcasm in your original post. It's pure petulance and ugliness, and it's all yours, while you tried, absurdly, to palm it off on the Bush II administration.

Try to recover all you want, but the good folks of DU have just shown you the error of your ways.

Oh, and if you don't like what I posted in the Feminists' Forum, you got some serious problems, so bite down hard on them, and try to learn.

You have a LOT to learn before you can be regarded with anything approaching respect.

Shame on you. Shame on you for your self-indulgence and your rudeness and your lack of compassion.

43. "Sarcasm" - the use of bitter or wounding remarks. Yeah I recognize it.
And your sarcasm is ugly and nasty and mean and small-minded. And you with your all caps and obscenities are screaming it to the rooftops. If you want to make sarcastic remarks on DU, try aiming them at Bush and his goonsquad, or even at yourself, but not at the poor and elderly.

What's your problem with the all cap shouting and the obscenities flung at OLL for disagreeing wtih you?

Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 08:21 PM by don954
as they have no more dollars? I can recall not too long ago when i lived on the edge of poverty, I would have to scape every penny together to go buy dinner. If I wasn't paying with a $ bill, its 'cause i was down to my last penny, literally.

BTW, you really sounded like a jerk in your original post, i don't know if you meant to or not but you did.

PS, BTW, one of my greatest days was when they put in the automated check out that accepted pennys. It made it so i wouldn't have to fact the embarrassment of having to count out change like that in front of other customers and the cashier. If someone ever did what you did, to me, i would have probably just dropped everything and ran out in tears. Being poor is very hard on the psyche.

39. My question is: Why is everyone in such a damn hurry?
A hurry to go where? If you're going into the grocery store to get a gallon of milk, plan ahead a little bit and then maybe you won't mind if the old man in front of you, probably in pain just standing there, is taking a little extra time buying whatever he's buying with change because he's gotta save every penny because he's living on a constantly deteriorating social security check and is just excited he's going to be having whatever he's buying for dinner instead of nothing. Think about that little old man the next time you're in a hurry. He's not doing it to piss you off. He's doing it so he can survive a few more days in this hell we call life.

51. I really don't know
I think it's more control-freak behavior than anything else; you (in the abstract, I don't mean "you") have to have your life going 100 percent according to your plans in the 24 hour day, and if it doesn't, you lash out. I used to be like that, then I realized what an ass I was to those around me..

I always wonder that
What are these people doing? Why are they so busy? What are they selling, or making, or buying, or doing? How did they get to be so important? Are they doing anything worthwhile? Do they realize there's a world around them that they're refusing to look at while they're being so busy?

It's mostly self-importance, I think, and a truly false sense of worth and value. Sadly, I fear this kind of arrogance solidifies with time, until the afflicted actually believe they are somehow entitled to have what they want when they want and nothing must get in their way as they pursue their fatuous goals.

Sort of like the behavior described in the OP here. I do feel bad for whatever life is like for that person. It's surely not happy, and it certainly is mean.

60. I understand being mildly annoyed
but the way you describe this is disturbing, and it has nothing to do with anyone else's posts or views, just my own. I've been annoyed by people in whatever situation that makes them twice as slow in a line as anyone else.. but I think the "old fart", "worn out shoes", "paying with pennies" The person doesn't want your charity, they have their own dignity, however small it seems to you or me.

As I've grown older I've become far more patient with people in different physical/mental condition. They aren't being slow or a pain to ANNOY you, they just can't get it done any faster. Your offering to toss money at them "just to move him along" is very condescending, and that might be why the people in line gasp disapprovingly. Most of us have had it engrained/beaten/whatever into our psyche to not embarrass the person with the "slowness" issue. Please don't embarrass these folks, they know they don't move as fast anymore.

Last summer I broke my heel bone and was on crutches for 6 weeks. It was horrible, but I have to say, adding another broken foot or arm would have been the end of me. I had it easy with only one foot in a cast. I gained a huge amount of empathy and respect for people with mobility problems. For the most part people went out of their way to help me, but if I wanted to do something on my own, they understood and let me. I learned a little about how people recognize eachother's dependence/independence.

I understand your annoyance, and maybe the attacks on you personally aren't fair, but your post was more than a little disturbing for me and apparently others to read.

It reminds me of this recent lawsuit in California (I think) where this old lady got a ticket for apparently walking too slow to cross a street in one light cycle. It just seems wrong to punish her or embarrass her for something she cannot help.

64. hey ripley, i have done it with the old, the young and the in between
and it isnt because i am in a hurry. it is because i do have a couple extra bucks and i can do it and i see someone is in need. i do get the cashier, always flustered, not sure what to make of it. i had one cashier tell me it wasnt the first time for a particular boy, obvious he didnt have a lot of money. he was in to buy a candy bar after school. the same as my boys. a little treat for a hard day of work for the boys. this little boy, i guess, was using a welfare card?, and the price had to be over a dollar. i thought no way is this boy going to do without when my boys are getting exactly the same, for the same reason. the cashier really wanted to refuse me paying for the boy.

i think it is good for others to see a person do this. maybe it will be easier for them the next time they are in line and see the person in front of them a bit short. and good for you that you give the same. pass it forward

77. Somebody's Mother
Somebody's Mother

- Mary Dow Brine (1816-1913)

The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the Winter's day.

The street was wet with a recent snow
And the woman's feet were aged and slow.

She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng

Of human beings who passed her by
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eyes.

Down the street, with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of "school let out,"

Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.

Past the woman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way.

Nor offered a helping hand to her -
So meek, so timid, afraid to stir

Lest the carriage wheels or the horses' feet
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.

At last came one of the merry troop,
The gayest laddie of all the group;

He paused beside her and whispered low,
"I'll help you cross, if you wish to go."

Her aged hand on his strong young arm
She placed, and so, without hurt or harm,

He guided the trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong.

Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content.

"She's somebody's mother, boys, you know,
For all she's aged and poor and slow,

"And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand,

"If ever she's poor and old and gray,
When her own dear boy is far away."

And "somebody's mother" bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said

Was "God be kind to the noble boy,
Who is somebody's son, and pride and joy!"

Learned this in 6th grade and it still brings on the tears.

79. Keep backtracking, but you showed yourself
Anyone who describes him or herself as "sarcastic" is, indeed, a very sorry person.

Or perhaps the poster doesn't know what "sarcasm" is. I rather suspect that, because what person would describe themselves as someone who deliberately wounds others?

You keep backtracking, and you keep trying to change what you wrote, but, sorry, it's there, in all its meanspirited glory, and nothing - absolutely nothing - you can write now can change what you said.

Your follow-up behavior was shameful, but DUers have big shoulders, and we can carry someone like you until you're healed.

94. Oh, Ripley....
I know, in your mind, you believe you are doing a good thing... But, I have to think you are either very very young, or ... well, I'll just hope you are very very young.

These poor elderly have the right to pay their entire bill in pennies, if they so desire. You do NOT have the right to take away their dignity, in the name of some public display of "altruism," which everyone who has read your post realizes is anything but. You are paying for the "right" to be demanding and impatient--to get your way. And you are doing so at the expense of this poor elderly person. If he truly did not have enough money, after you patiently allowed him to count out his change, then sure, you could offer to help. But, in so doing, if you were truly altruistic, you would go out of your way to prevent the poor man from feeling diminished--perhaps by saying you were just paying back a similar favor done for you some time ago when you rushed out without enough money.

Ripley, I don't think you are a bad person, but you need some introspection. This isn't an attack on you. But, it seems everyone here has immediately seen what you seemingly can't... that your "good deed" may have been "good" in intention, but (given your objective and the way in which you went about it) in truth, was anything but.

You don't know the difference between sarcastic and ironic.

One is wounding, the other doesn't do harm.

Consider that.

And try to have the courage of your convictions. Taking down that "FUCK YOU FREEPER" you addressed to a fellow DUer who disagreed with what you did was what you intended. Backing down when you got called on it betrayed a lack of belief in yourself.
