Falwell: no Dem can attract conservative Christian vote, shuns Giuliani

The Rev. Jerry Falwell doesn't see any Democrat making inroads with evangelical Christian voters in the next presidential election. Potential Republican candidate Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York city mayor, won't be scoring any points with Falwell, either.

"Everybody admires him. And I'll never forget the great things he did on 9/11 and following," Falwell said.

"But, of course, we have, as conservative Christians who take the Bible seriously, we have probably irreconcilable differences on life and family and that kind of thing," Falwell said Sunday on "Late Edition" on CNN.

"I'll never speak an ill word about him because he means so much to America. But, yes, you're right. I couldn't support him for president," he said.

2. No Democrat is gonna get elected going after the conservative base anyway
So the unavailablity of that base is irrelevent to Democratic candidates. I mean how many people here would vote for a Dem who got Falwell's endorsement?

3. and yet so many of the dems still pander to the religoids.
they'd be much better advised to try to attract the non-voters back to the polls, than to try to appease the right and center-right.

the main thing they have in common being good at raising money.

28. the problem with non-voters is that they don't vote . . . .
I know a few non-voters, and nothing is going to get them to the polls. Unfortunate.

because the religoid righties are NOT going to vote for repuke-lite, and neither are a lot of us on the left- not anymore.

31. There's a difference between running to the center and repuke-lite
for example Bush-Boy ran to the center in 2000 and look at him now!

If Falwell's crowd don't like mccain or rudy, they will become non-voters.

33. running to the center works better for pugs-
because they go left to do so.

Dems have to go to far to the right to get to the center- and too many of them believe the propaganda spewed by the corporate media that that's where the votes are.

most americans are liberal leftists at their heart, because that's where both real american and real christian ideals stem from.

4. This is true
So doesn't everyone think it's high time that the Dems stop pandering to them?

All it does is legitimize the policies of what ought to be a fringe group.

6. I take the Bible "seriously". I do not like Paywell telling me that I do
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 02:03 AM by wake.up.america
not take the Bible "seriously" because I have tolerance for people who have a different lifestyle and because I do not place the almighty dollar before everything and everyone as does Paywell.

Democrats need to make it clear that we are in fact VERY religious. We adhere to love, compassion, tolerance, and we treasure human life.

Paywell is using "religion" as a front accumulating power and wealth. His sect members ought to wake up.

Paywell should have some serious sessions with a shrink. He ought to learn what religion is all about.

Stupid quote of the day by Paywell:

"But, of course, we have, as conservative Christians who take the Bible seriously, we have probably irreconcilable differences on life and family and that kind of thing," Falwell said Sunday on "Late Edition" on CNN."

9. Falwell has bought the GOP/Theocrat party
Even McCain has bowed down to him. The Republican party as we knew it is dead. It should be renamed the Theocrat/GOP party. Get ready for your Bibles and prayers. The government and the church has become one.

Then we'll take them seriously as Christians.

Oh, and they should stop voting for the Party of Moloch and Mammon. Just a thought.

21. This might just do it. This and other similar bombast.
It would be a delight to see the fundie wackos all have to herd off to somebody else's camp. Frankly, I think because of the currency he built up over 9/11, giuliani would be a ferocious competitor, maybe even a little too tough to beat. But if foulwell and friends are ready to siphon off a big chunk of voter support, that's more than alright by me! It'll rob him of momentum and not a little bit of fan base. He (and any other republi-CON) would need that group solidly behind him to win, and if this kind of thing gets rolling, he won't have that support. GOOD!

22. Tearing themselves apart.
Those who made in their mission in 2000 to swiftboat McCain will never vote for him, and will more than likely go for a moderate like Guiliani, while the fundie base will do what they are told. This is not the unified GOP of the last 2 elections, and the rift will grow larger as the rhetoric heats up.

29. Wolf Blitzer is the only man in America who
Seems to me that Wolf Blitzer is the only man in America who would interview Jerry Falwell to find out what Christians think of the various possible candidates. Who else besides Falwell himself really thinks this guy is some kind of representative voice for American Christians? Every Christian I know, even more conservative ones, thinks he's a blowhard who turns more people away from the religion than brings anyone to it.

who also resents the implication that only Conservative Christians take the bible seriously, as if we are the redheaded stepchildren of the Christian community...ahem, sorry, tangent...

Well, let's just say I hope that the days of Conservative Christians being so politicallly influencial are numbered. I have trouble considering them at all Christ-like.
