Dixie Chicks on CNN - I think this proves CNN has gone freeper
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/04/17.html#a7941

The callers mostly had unintelligent warbling taken straight from the RW gas bags.

snip

Tom in Staten Island

No I don’t think they will welcome them back, because they were very
disrespectful to our President: President George W. Bush.

Terri Johnson from Long Beach

I have military friends in Iraq who think it's ridiculous, and they do not
like her-er them ... three girls-who need to be kicked out of the United
States for ever saying anything about the President.

Judy from Milwaukee

I certainly hope not, because they're still doing the same- same stuff-being, uh, extremely disrespectful saying we were all ashamed of the President and it's, it’s, just something that should not be acceptable.

17. Only if they return to the charts and do well.
If they don't, then it will be argued whether it was weakness in the new album or politics. Their main audience was C&W, and they clearly lost them back then, and whether they will be accepted again remains to be seen. They could end up being a niche group that only plays for us lefties or they may jettison politics and go back to C&W. Its more a marketplace issue now, not a political one at this point.

Note that there is a lot of good music that never gets popular. Filk is one (yes its spelled correctly), and until recently Celtic. One of my favorite groups is called 4 Bitchin Babes, excellent and funny, and no one has every heard of them.

22. IIRC, there were people destroying their albums publicly
so maybe they were restocking. Seriously, Billboard or other music industry tracker would be the right place to get that data. What is clear is that they were dropped in their entirety from some country station play lists. I know I have not heard them in a while.

Again IIRC, the sales and air time did drop, but their remaining tour dates remained well attended. Since touring barely breaks even, if my recollection is correct, they were impacted financially. Its also been some time since they toured or released an album. Then again, they one of two of them had given birth recently, and taking care of babies is always a good thing.

Again, this is all history and it will be interesting to see how well they do with this next album. If its tight musically and not too political over all, they may well be back into the thick of things. However, music is a very fickle business.

24. So pro Bush C/W musicians get to be 'political' ('Iraq and I roll') but
those against have to watch what they say, eh?

25. Pretty Much
Its a market based thing, and they pissed off their primary audience. Not a good thing to do if you want to sell lots and lots of records and get copious air time. You either sell well or you do not. Their statements cost them and those around them money. Whether they can recover or not is yet to be seen. While their over all sound is not my favorite, it still was good music, and I hope that they can stay out there. However, they may no longer be profitable. The music biz is pretty darwinian about things. All that said, I'll buy their new album, but that will have no impact if their remain successful or not.

29. Well, considering they made their 'ashamed Bush is from TX' remark on
March 10, 2003, and that despite the furor and Clear Channel orchestrated disc crushings and banning of them from playlists, that their album was number one country in April 2003:

http://www.talkleft.com/new_archives/002350.html

And that their album peaked at #3 that year,

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/retrieve_chart_history.do?model.chartFormatGroupName=Albums&model.vnuArtistId=28586&model.vnuAlbumId=772530

And that their single peaked at #1 that year,

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/retrieve_chart_history.do?model.chartFormatGroupName=Singles&model.vnuArtistId=28586&model.vnuAlbumId=772530

I don't think your contention that they lost all their listeners because of their remarks, a common Right Wing conventional wisdom not necessarily backed up by facts, is necessarily true. I think a more likely scenario is that they backed off for a while because of all the unpleasantness foisted on them.

33. My comments are based on media reports and some
family who are in the music business. I passed you stats on to them, and will be interested to see what their response is. Their comment to me awhile back was that within the CW music biz, they would have to be climbing out of a pretty deep hole. They also reminded me that its all $ in the music biz not politics. I personally am all for entertainers speaking out, wish more would do it more often.

37. The Dixie Chicks have basically renounced the world of Country music, as
I understand it, and are basically "popular music" artists now. As a result of their treatment in 2003.

2. Well, the Dixie Chicks aren't ready to make nice, either
Listen here.

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could

But I’m still waiting

6. It's in the Constitution, same paragraph that says we're a Christian
nation, "Under God" will be said in the Pledge and that if you disagree with the (R) President, then you're an America-hating, terrorist enabling, pinko Commie f*g and need to be kicked out of the country. If you disagree with the (D) President (or his wife) however, then you're a fine American, standing up for her morals and values and Jeebus and the children and our right to own guns and...

7. As if further proof were necessary...
CNN is worse than Fox, because they still try to claim (and some people still believe) that they're credible and impartial.

They've been programmed off of my TV since around 2000- and I'm better informed because of it.

12. What's incredible tome is the numbers of Americans who would
deny the Dixie Chicks their right to dissent, who want them exiled (thrown out of the US, is what one caller said). Before I watched that clip, I respected the Dixie Chicks but didn't own any of their music; now I'll buy the CD. Radio isn't the _only_ way to sell CDs.

13. There's a couple of people who just don't "get" America at all.
Yet they live here and think of themselves as Americans. It's sad and scary.

The last two clearly think that Free Speech, ISN'T. The first wants critics expelled (hey, DUers, got your bags packed? We'll be thrown out en masse) the second uses the milder term, "Should Not Be Acceptable". The first one's a jingoistic moron, but the second one is more dangerous: She'd be backing laws to limit Free Speech.

14. I don't remember CNN doing a piece on Toby Keith......
when he wrote his "boot up the ass" song. So, it's alright to be a fascist warmonger but questioning the sanity and wisdom of the worst pResident our country has ever had is unpatriotic. :eyes: Most Country Western fans aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer to begin with. Their understanding of politics is somewhat limited. It must be uber-nationalistic, jingoistic, pseudo-patriotic bullshit than can be expressed on the confines of their belt buckle or pick-up truck bumper. Yes, I know. That's a rather sweeping generalization but I don't care. I calls 'em as I sees 'em. ;)

If nothing else, maybe this exposes these freedom-hating repukes for everyone to see.
