2. Absolutely
Many of us here at DU focus on more complicated issues, but there's lots of Americans whose most potent source of political analysis is the gas pump.

3. For some, the choice will soon be gas or food
We all know the drill, low wages, higher transportation costs, what gets cut back to survive?

5. The anecdotal evidence I have about the gas pump affecting the POTUS
Those of my relatives who bitch the loudest about gas prices are the biggest Shrub supporters. I would say that there is a statistical correlation: the louder they bitch about gas, the bigger Shrub supporters they are. When you are blinded by the hateful glow of Limbaugh or the fantasy of Shrub as the second coming or both, funny things happen in your brain (or what is left of it.)

WASHINGTON — Running for president five years ago, George W. Bush (search) pledged to jawbone energy-exporting nations to keep oil prices low and to win passage of legislation to spur more domestic energy production.

<snip>

At a meeting Monday at his Texas ranch, Bush is promising to press Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah (search), to do more to help ease global oil prices.

Still, the president acknowledges that there is little that he or Congress can do to quickly lower gasoline prices, which have climbed past $2.20 a gallon nationwide.

<snip>

Bush criticized President Clinton for tapping into the reserve in 2000, suggesting it was a political gesture to help Vice President Al Gore, then Bush's Democratic rival for the White House.

Bush also criticized the Clinton administration for not lobbying the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, saying Clinton "must jawbone OPEC (search) members to lower prices." Yet as president, Bush mostly has emphasized that market forces should set world oil prices.

The above is from Faux Snooze, so your right wing victims won't be able to complain that the source isn't 'Mein Kempf' enough for them. The whole article is worth checking out, as it contains more criticism of Dubya's failed energy policies.

I think you must already be aware of the now-infamous 'jawbone' quote, but this one lays it out quite well.

I've never heard of anyone collecting rotary phones, that's interesting. I worked for a phone company for 33 years, and have seen huge bins on them being sent off to the recycling factory.

6. What gets me is how sneaky way they do it ....
That is the raising of the price on gas first they raise the price quickly to a all time high ,then slowly they bring it down ,so we get daily stories of gas prices dropping ,then the whole thing stops, leaving many people beliveing that the prices went up for a short time ,and then came back down ,however the prices never come down to what they where when the whole thing started. The are betting on the short amount of time us Americans stay on a story ,however this time ,they should have realized when it comes to gas prices ,we dont forget that it use to cost $28.00 to fil my tank and now its $45.00 ! This hurts my pocket ,however whats hurts me more is everytime a young American or a inocent civilian dies in Iraq , yet apprently the almighty dollare would bring bush down B/4 the early demise of thousands of human beings ,what a sad sad statemet on the priorities of our country . :-(
