Duke is an "extremely liberal" college??
Caught a brief snippet of "anal-cysted, chickenhawk, drug addled pole-smoking" Limpballs show on the way to get some lunch. He was on and on about how those poor boys are being railroaded, and that it's the feminization of America that is to blame. Saying we've been so feminized by the femi-nazis that all you have to do is cry rape, because the feminazi's have been brainwashing women for years that all men are rapist, etc, etc, etc, ad-nauseum.

Then he said something that completely floored me. He said look at how quickly Duke University has thrown these kids under the bus, because Duke is an "extremely liberal" college.

Now, I'm not an expert, but the word I get is that Duke is more of a conservative bastion where the wealthy and connected attend school, and the North Carolina is more of a working class school.

It must be great for Rush, to get wealthy and powerful off of the stupidity of your listeners.

Anyway, don't want to start an in-state battle between the Duke and UNC folks, but is Duke an "extremely liberal" school??

1. I listened for three minutes today and discovered
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 02:32 PM by BOSSHOG
that there are thousands of retired generals and admirals that support rumsfeld? Proof? Explanation? An interview with one of them? Citing an independent corraborative document? None of the above. He has all he needs; the ears of the insane conservatives who are fucking this country daily.

I wonder if rush will scream rape when he's in prison.

4. Well, it's obvious all those 'thousands' of generals support Rumsfeld
... because they haven't (yet) committed seppuku. :silly: After all, that's how Tojo knew, right?

2. Neither Duke nor UNC is 'extremely liberal'
I am sure the analcyst would claim every school with a women's studies program is "extremely liberal."

The characterization of Duke as a ritzy 4-year hideout for the extremely wealthy and well-connected is total bullshit. It's a fine private university, and UNC is a fine public university.

11. Well, you gotta admit that UNC is a bastion of liberal thought
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 02:50 PM by NCevilDUer
when compared to most the rest of the state.

In comparison, it leaves Duke in the dust. The very expensive dust.

ON EDIT - It is, however, probably more liberal than NCSU, just by osmosis.

13. I don't see it.
I've worked for both Universities, and found the campus cultures to be almost identical. Fringe populations of spoiled richie rich types included.

As for the price of an education from either institution, it's outrageous. But to Duke's credit, they find a way to bring in students who deserve to be there, regardless of ability to pay.

17. OK, I'll buy that.
I guess it's just the impression I get, from a distance. I live in Raleigh, about 4 blocks from NCSU, but don't get up to Durhan/Chapel Hill very often.

3. It has its share of liberal and conservative students
just like any other school. I found it just as liberal as UNC-Chapel Hill and much less conservative than NC State.

Duke has (or had in the near past) a fairly liberal divinity department, a very active GBLT studies department (if I recall correctly, all undergrads have to take some course that exposes them to GBLT issues), but the law school is somewhat conservative.

It has a long list of alumni on either side of the spectrum.

7. Live in Durham, have worked at Duke
Duke is pretty much neutral in the politics category. You can find both professors and students with every bent of political belief there.

Rush is talking, as usual, out of his ass.

Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 02:55 PM by chookie
I doubt if he was there for the liberal atmosphere -- probably for the top rated law school.

He started an organization called "The Orthogonians" -- a social club comprised of young men from humble origins who had hot dog and beans parties, in contrast to the privileged elite there (which Nixon always despised).

Libby Dole went there too. Probably not for the drum circles.

19. Well, you're not exactly being fair to the Dukes here
While it is true that they were tobacco farmers made REALLY GOOD, they also were great philathropists and did not want to see this area go without decent health care. In his will, Washington Duke gave a gift of $20 million to Trinity college. It moved to Durham and became Duke University, with the medical school getting top placement.

21. Its Literature Program and English Dept., at least,
have long had a history of liberalism. I also know the director of the Women's Stidoes Program--which has also been historically excellent and progressive. In fact, Duke was one of the most important schools in the queer theory revolution in the 90s.

I can't speak about the entire university, however.

...smack in the middle of the conservative South. But 'extremely liberal'? Hell no.

Do you believe anything Limpballs says? Who is surprised he'd stick up for those boys - no matter WHAT they did? Who is surprised he'd blame 'feminazis' for this? He must have been an abused child. He has issues.
