$8 trillion dollars in debt--a trillion's meaning in a time perspective.

I think this would be a useful comparison to explain to someone what it means when we say 8 trillion dollars in debt.

In the U.S., one trillion is written as the number
"1" followed by 12 zeros (1,000,000,000,000)

thousand; $ 8,000 seconds = 2.2 hours

tens of thousands $ 80,000 seconds = almost one day or .925

hundred of thousands $ 800,000 seconds = 9.25 days

million 8,000,000 seconds = around 3 months or 3.04 months

hundreds of millions 800,000,000 seconds = around 25 years or 25.36

billion 8,000,000,000 seconds = 253.6 years

trillion 8.000,000,000,000 seconds= 253,658 years

(60sec/min) x (60 min/hr) x (24 hr/da) x (365.25 da) = 3.16 x 107 sec
One trillion seconds of ordinary clock time =

( 1012 sec)/( 3.16 x 107 sec/yr) = 31,546 years!

8 x 31,546 years = 253,658 years!

7. thanks I used this when I was teaching Math but never as applied to
the deficit, lol, only to reach a student on number concepts and the relationship of exponents.

I still think that this is a good reference for the average person to understand time, number theory and distance, as in light years, and lol
money or the what is owed on debt.

8. Well, I keep hearing about how the 22nd amendment is to be repealed...
Still, Clinton balanced the budget.

DOMA, DMCA, NAFTA, COPA, 1996 telecom reform, and a slew of other things shouldn't be the compromises we had to make.

10. Bush adds 7 trillion dollars to the budget & current account debts
when he leaves office in 2009. He inherited a small budget surplus and a small current account deficit, and now they are approaching 1.4 trillion dollars a year when you add the off-budget items. Insanity!

11. Exxon's chief would have to work only __________years to pay off this.

In 2005, Exxon CEO Raked in 190K a Day

Average Americans are struggling to keep up with persistently high gas prices, now approaching $3 a gallon. Testifying before Congress last November, Exxon CEO Lee Raymond blamed the problem on ,global supply and demand, and assured the public that ,we,are all in this together.

Last year, Raymond made do with a total compensation package? of just $69.7 million
or $190,915 a day, including weekends.

Now the mathematical question is:
good old Lee
would have to work how many years to pay off this debt?....... alone

and what should his real share be? It sure the hell is not $24, 000

16. how many years to pay off this debt?....... alone
Give or take 41,903,464.89 days or 114,725.43 years.

And this from a man making just a little better than two dollars and twenty cents .. EVERY SECOND

( just to keep it kicked (; )

14. And they say the economy is strong?
Its being financed by foreign banks that keep giving a new credit limit.

Its like getting a new credit card to pay the minimum payment on your old credit card thats maxed out.

But whos counting? The economy is strong...I guess. At least thats what theyre telling us.

15. Didn't an AAR caller note million/billion/trillion in seconds yesterday?
Was that Randi's show? I think they were quoting Clinton's Labor Secretary, Robert Reich.
It really puts it in perspective, doesn't it?

I appreciate your applying it to the National Debt.

21. Bush's fiscal incompetence is overshadowed only by his arrogance and
ignorance.

He has handled the finances of the American people very poorly. To say he deserves a "Needs immediate improvement" rating is an understatement.

George Bush should be impeached for lying to us, bankrupting the country, compromising our security, and for destroying America's core values, rights, and liberties.
