Navy sailors get Army training at Fort Jackson
FORT JACKSON, S.C. - Navy sailors are trading sea legs for land combat as the U.S. Army is opening its largest training base to help them survive when sent into Afghanistan or Iraq.

The Navy is sending thousands of men and women to support Army units in those regions and wants its sailors to hone their fighting skills.

"Hit the ground and brace yourself with your weapon!" senior drill instructor Warren Brown yelled at a dozen trainees slithering across a mud-soaked field. "Look around, pick yourself up and go! You're under fire!"

After struggling up from the mud with her M-16 in hand, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jade Permenter insisted Brown's instructions to keep her head and butt down might save her life someday.

7. Your right, but there is a shortage of ground troops
Considering that some Marines and Army (both full and pt) are on their 4 and 5th tours plus the amount injured. With a swelling civil war coming fast on their heels.

My husband who's in the navy knew about this last yr, for it was all the buzz.

It's insanity but then again consider who's calling the shots. Rummy doesn't give too shits about the men and women in uniform, until he's removed.. make that: until this WHOLE administration is removed, our troops won't have any hope of leaving Iraq.

10. I posted this story on my Navy vets board and here is a freeper
response:

"Our smaller, lighter cheaper military that we inherited from the Clinton era made this necessary."

Of course it's Clinton's fault. It could never be because the rethugs attacked a country that they shouldn't have, could it?

13. They probably used the "carrot on a stick" approach.

Extra money in the form of combat pay.

Some Sailors, especially those with dependents, just can't turn it down.
