FBI Says It Will Go to Prosecutors to obtain Jack Anderson's papers
Kevin N. Anderson, Jack Anderson's son, said he will go to jail to protect the papers.

In Pursuit of Anderson's Papers, FBI Says It Will Go to Prosecutors if Talks With Family Fail

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Wednesday that it will ask the Justice Department to take action if the government cannot reach an agreement with the family of the muckraking journalist Jack Anderson to search through his papers. The FBI believes that Anderson's archive, which is now held by George Washington University's library, contains classified information -- although most of it is likely decades old.

Anderson, who died in December, was for decades one of Washington's best-known investigative journalists. His syndicated column, Washington Merry-Go-Round, was carried in hundreds of newspapers.

Although the FBI will not detail its plans, turning to the Justice Department would likely result in a subpoena for the papers, said Kevin N. Anderson, Jack Anderson's son. He said he would continue to resist the government's demands.

"I'm going to get a Blackberry so I can send out word on my way to jail," he said while driving to a television station for an interview. The case, which was first reported on Tuesday in The Chronicle, has garnered national media attention and raised the ire of liberal and anti-government bloggers.

1. I guess you're aren't "secure in your papers" if your papers
are a dead man's.

Odd thing about how the constitution is being respected by this DOJ? Not really Cheney has been out to bury under reclassification every shred of evidence of his political life. Why? Who knows...but based on the level of his motivation to pursue these things,it must be terribly important to him. Cheney is clearly deeply interested in burying skeletons.

Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 11:26 AM by MrModerate
Is the Intelligence Community has no real need to reclaim these papers. Surely the statute of limitations has run out on anything really juicy and the few genuinely-buried secrets can't be of significant interest. It's like the reclassification of papers they've been carrying out at <I forget the name of the facility -- some national library>: decades-old papers, every one of them subsequently superseded by events or related exposure . . . but still they're trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

Compulsive, if you ask me. Compulsive and creepy. Maybe that's the definition of a good spy?

A fully revealed BCCI would have PREVENTED 9-11, folks - it's THAT serious. Of COURSE BushInc wants to conceal whatever is in Anderson's documents - some of it is still secret and used as background.

Mueller is a total BFEE made man. I can see him working feverishly to cover every base he can for the Bushes and their dirty dealings of the last FIFTY YEARS.

some 200 boxes now being held by George Washington University's library, could be a trove of information about state secrets, dirty dealings, political maneuverings, and old-fashioned investigative journalism

I hope they're under lock and key with armed guards posted. :scared:

I saw the son being interviewed, but only caught the tail end of the show and was wondering what the heck was going on. Thanks for the link!

Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 12:36 PM by blm
George Washington U is where the National Security Archives are - that is where I learned much about the BFEE and their ACTUAL dealings in IranContra and BCCI. NSA works to preserve the REAL government record and uses the congressional record and acquired documents like Anderson's to do it.

No doubt BushInc's move on this is how they plan to TRY and rewrite history. Mueller has long been one of their chief cover up artists.

This story is very important and I hope more come to realize its significance. Thanks for noticing it.

14. This is a Goddamned Outrage!
Democrats should be demanding an investigation of this--whether it happens or not, it will get these things out into the public, and show that Democrats are doing something about it. Jack Anderson was one of the greatest investigative reporters ever, who broke many more important stories and uncovered many more scandals than Woodward and Bernstein ever did, back before they were around, and even after Woodward had become Nixon years later. This is exactly the same type of terrorist act as exposing the name of an active undercover CIA agent, Valerie Plame, to persecute her husband, the critic of Bush and Cheney's war rationale lies; the same as Atty. General Gonzales demanding access to all Google searches for a specific period of time, on the bizarre pretext that they are hunting "internet porn"; the same as getting possibly millions of domestic telephone and computer records on the pretext that they are hunting "terrorists"; the same as, for example, when the Democratic Executive of Wayne County (Detroit) MI, Ed McNamara retired, the FBI suddenly swooped down and confiscated all records from McNamara's office, home, and the office of the top staffer. They were then "investigating" a "corruption" charge, don'cha know--and "luckily," it ended up that there was no corruption. The papers were never returned. This has happened many, many times, it is frightening, the buttfucking "media" is not reporting any of it--except Lou Dobbs, that I have heard--and it is directed against ordinary American citizens; don't think it is not. I have never heard of anything like this in my life.

If these people are able to accomplish every one of these fishing expeditions and eventually confiscate everyone's papers, notes, tape recordings, and everything else that ever existed, there will eventually be no independant record of any of the multitudes of crimes their whole group has committed over the generations, and nobody left to answer any of the lies and distortions, or counter any of the blanket censorship that is also worse than anything I have ever experienced. At that point, even if you don't believe their lies about history, themselves, the "reasons" for things, or anything else, you will still be reduced to a kind of non-acting stupor, as you, regardless, don't really know anything about your own country anymore. This is extremely threatening. The papers of the great Jack Anderson--as the family has been saying--belong to the American public!

19. You know ...
Stories like these really make me appreciate men like Jack Anderson, whose brand of journalism is sadly lacking in modern times. He pursued the truth, no matter how dirty it was. Imagine that.

I would have to think that he lived his life with a certain degree of fear, doing what he did. He must've known some curious facts indeed for the FBI to pursue his papers with such tenacity only after his death.

44. Why This is so Important--It is a Pattern
If you go to http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Jack+Anderson+FBI+papers+&btnG=Search you will find a number of newspaper articles about this frightening case, and get a little more background on why it is so dangerous. This FBI abuse of the late Jack Anderson is, as a matter of fact, exactly like the recently-exposed domestic spying program, eavesdropping on ordinary American citizens who did nothing wrong, but who disagree with the current Administration. Not even Nixon did things like this, but Cheney and Bush do. The fact that it has recently been established that there were phone calls both to and from the White House itself, to the Republican operative who jammed the phone lines in New Hampshire at the Democratic get-out-the-vote phone bank, and cost Jeanne Shaheen the election, as it was that close and she was expected to win, the fact that Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said at a Judiciary Committee hearing that Republican operatives hacked and released Durbin's staff's e-mails (traced), the fact that the Plame sabotage has now been traced back to not only the Vice-President but the President, the fact that it has been established that FEMA awarded a $100 MILLION contract to a relative of the Republican Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, the fact that they invaded Iraq, a country we had no dealings with, and suddenly now their oil production is down to nothing and world oil/gas prices are at record throat-slitting highs, and both Bush and Cheney are from the oil industry, the fact that the Swift Boat Liars were all traced back to Republican front groups, the fact that the most corrupt lobbyist in American history, Jack Abramoff, was a Republican operative and close friend of Bush's, the fact that Republican donors have infiltrated every Federal Department and completely subverted everything from its public mandate to become an institution of corporate lobbying, the fact that the procurement director for the armed forces, Bunnatine Greenhouse--a national hero--was attacked and demoted when she refused to okay contracts that were not fulfilled or were price-gouged, on and on and on, and the fact that anyone who complains about anything is smeared, slandered and destroyed, shows you the unprecedented level of crime, corruption, and anti-Constitutional facsism that goes on with this group.

Jack Anderson was a great reporter, with some 50 years of work, files, and information on Washington people, many of whom are still alive and active. The FBI and its occasional crimes and incompetence itself was a main area of investigation. The phony pretext of this Soviet-style theft of papers and intimidation of citizens, is an investigation on a group called AIPAC, a pro-Israel lobbying group. What makes it so threatening is that Anderson was very ill the last few years, was not working regularly, and never wrote about AIPAC--never. The FBI wants 50 years' worth of documents--all of it, every bit of it--on this pretext that is clearly phony, but designed to get past the media buttfucks, who will investigate nothing anyway--that is, that some papers were supposedly "Classified," although no investigation previous to this has ever tied Jack Anderson to anything of any kind, and the years are all wrong. They waited for Anderson to die, then immediately started badgering and pressuring the grieving widow for the papers. This is a huge story, or should be, because it is yet another--and the most "violent," if you will, yet--example of the viciousness, threat, and hammer-handed abuse of people used by this Republican Party to achieve what it wants, which is to cover their crimes and associations--after all, Bush got the entire Saudi Arabia chapter of the official Joint Congressional Sept. 11th Report censored and blacked out. You should FEAR what they are hiding and attacking people about, and investigate further if we can.

He was a powerful adversary of the oil industry. Seems as if I vaguely recall Anderson may have been investigating oil company windfall profits as well. It was enough of a scandal that there were investigations in the 70s.

Also, didn't Bev Harris once work for Anderson?
