CNN: Lawyer Falls Dead In Courtroom While Arguing Case

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- A defense lawyer was arguing a drunken driving case when he fell on the courtroom floor and died of an apparent heart attack, officials and friends said.

Bailiffs and a police officer tried to administer CPR immediately after 57-year-old Tom Farris collapsed Thursday in the Wake County courthouse.

Emergency personnel arrived less than six minutes later.

Farris had previous heart problems, said Duncan McMillan, a friend and fellow lawyer.

McMillan said neither the rescue workers nor the court building had defibrillators, which can sometime revive patients by delivering shocks to the heart.

2. How sad. Before the glut of insensitive yet well-founded lawyer jokes....
...begin I'd like to say that it's a shame that the man was not with his family when he passed.

5. Perhaps
he was someone who absolutely loved his job and, therefore, passed away while doing something he enjoyed!

6. It's funny you should mention that- in an earlier edit I talked about that
...because you can't be a lawyer without loving your job. You're absolutely right, I believe!

3. One would think the courthouse would have first priority
for a defibrillator.

7. Wow... thats horrible. For the family, his clients, the judge, etc.....
I would hate to witness that first hand. I'm guessing (or should I say hoping) they rescheduled everything on the docket and sent everyone home.

9. In a Late Breaking News from CNN
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 03:50 PM by Jose Diablo
Attorneys for the family of Tom Farras have filed a Wrongful Death lawsuit against the City of Raleigh-Durham due to misfeasance causing newly purchased defibrillators to not be installed, thus causing the Wrongful Death of the late Mr. Farras after his heart failure while defending his client in court.
