Fuck You ExxonMobil, I have a plan (plus: bonus rant)
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 03:28 PM by Cleetus
I did it.

I quit smoking (day 3) and started exercizing (day 2). I'm old, fat and out of shape, but thanks to all the miserable bastards who will put gas at over $4.00 a gallon, I quit smoking so I could ride my bike without getting winded. Then I rode my bike. For over 5 miles. For the first time in years.

Jeezuz, $33.00 to fill up my fucking Corolla, I hope these bastards spend all their windfall profit on chemotherapy.

19. So..... how does that work?
If Citgo gas is from Venezuela, and they are not tied to the middle east oil situation... or are they?

I'd say this is even more mega profits for Venezuela than anyone else, since they're not having to pay the $75/barrel for their oil... I don't get it.

28. ::ahem:: you're moving me along?
Hey, I buy at Citgo as often as I can; what I wanted to know was what was pressuring them to increase their prices too. I suppose honest inquiry is a problem for you?

30. CITGO is just as profitable as other oil companies
Using Venezuela's key oil industry, Chávez ranks among OPEC's price hawks, pushing for strict production quotas and high price targets.

Prodigy: Blue Gasoline at Amerada Hess

Posted by conversion on February 3, 2005 - 7:01pm

In the seventeenth century, a strange and unique marvel was known as a prodigy. In the nineteenth century, such curiosities were called rarees. In the twenty-first century, such a wonder may come to be known as a hess. Yes, we have found that one thing which none of us thought existed: a blue oil & gas company. And not just a pale, marginal blue, but a 98.1% solid primary blue: Amerada Hess and their retail outlets, Hess Express convenience stores.

Amerada Hess is an independent energy company, engaged in the production of crude oil and natural gas, refining, and the marketing of refined petroleum products, natural gas, and electricity. No surprise there. But their Chairman and CEO, John B. Hess, and his wife donated over $150,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, MoveOn, and host of individual Democratic candidates ranging from Howard Dean and Hillary Clinton to Betty Castor and Barak Obama during the 2003-2004 election cycle. And the company's "blueness" does not stop with political patronage.

Amerada Hess has a Social Responsibility Policy which extends well beyond some corporate document churned out for the benefit of guilty-minded shareholders. They have long-standing commitments to act responsibly towards human rights, labor, and social issues wherever they've operated and are much more environmentally conscious than your standard oil company. They have, for example, voluntarily established air emission targets for greenhouse gases and other criteria pollutants and have formed a subsidiary, Hess Microgen, which develops cogeneration units and energy systems which run on methane derived from livestock facilities. They also subsidize Nuvera, a leading company in the development of fuel cells and other alternate forms of energy.

Their Social Responsibility Policy, however, is not confined to company performance. Amerada Hess has partnered with Earthwatch in the UK, for example, to create thirty fellowships for secondary school teachers to take part in environmental research projects. They have funded libraries, schools, and hospitals in Equatorial Guinea, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands. They have provided disaster relief in Algeria, Jakarta, and Colombia - and provided $5 million to the families of victims of the World Trade Center attack. They support the UN Declaration of Human Rights and became a signatory to the UN Global Compact in 2002, a voluntary initiative to incorporate human rights, and labor and environmental principles into standard corporate practice. Further, Hess adheres to an affirmative action policy and was among the first companies to include sexual orientation among their equal opportunity commitments.

Those who know me will be crying, "Have you taken leave of your senses? You're singing the praises of an oil company, for God's sake!" Yeah, okay - at the end of the day, Amerada Hess is still an oil company and, granted, there are other oil companies which make token contributions to worthy causes and which fund research into alternate sources of energy. But, for those of us who have to use gasoline, shouldn't we be doing everything in our power to support a company which has a political conscience as well? which puts its environment, health, and safety policies into practice? whose chairman puts over 98% of his political funding into progressive organizations and candidates? Given the limited options (and the grim alternatives), Hess is clearly worthy of support and, to my mind, gratitude. Those of us on the east coast can support them with our custom. Those of us elsewhere in the country can encourage their business practices and political patronage with letters of support, urging them to expand their retail outlets and maintain their standards.

I managed to travel all the way from Boston to Miami and back using only Hess Gasoline (except for about $20.00 worth in an emergency)

8. Thanks
The thing is, I did it. My journey was not a long one, but it was a useful one. Every day I have driven to my favorite coffee house, about 2 1/2 miles away from my home. Today I did it by bike, and it feels so good that I really can't explain it. Like I said before, not even worth a mention when someone 30 yerars younger than me, in good shape, rides a bike 5 miles, but when somone my age, in my condition does it, it is a big deal.

Thanks for the nice words. Much appreciated.

Years ago,I lived on Beach 42nd St (near the lighthouse)< I also lived in Sheepshead Bay for a few years (E 19St & Ave Z) That was a long time ago.

Did you ever go to Coney Island?
Did you ever stop in front of the Polar Express and listen to the music?
Do you remember a fat, white DJ? (At times, I was the only white guy you would see. I really stood out)

right off Surf Avenue.
I have lived on Altantic Ave and Beach 38th St, Maple Ave, Highland Avenue and Neptune Avenue. I have lived here since 1982.

In Sheepshead Bay, I lived on Avenue X and East 13th for 11 years. But I know E19th and Ave Z very well. Had a friend who lived right there and go to Doody's all the time on Avenue Y.

I go to Coney Island and walk on the Boardwalk a lot. Mostly Russian there now.
When was the last time you were at the Polar Express?

Claim: Gary Heavin, founder and CEO of the fitness chain Curves, supports pro-life causes.

Status: True.

Just so you know: Gary Heavin, the founder of the Waco, Texas-based chain of exercise studios called Curves, is a heavy contributor to several organizations allied with Operation Save America, the rather more muscular successor to Operation Rescue, the anti-choice group.

The organizations he funds are spreading the lie that abortions lead to an increased risk of breast cancer. Planned Parenthood says its operations in Texas are being threatened by Heavin-funded clinics based on the old therapeutic model "you must carry your child to term."

In an article in Christianity Today, Heavin expressed pride in his involvement with anti-choice groups, to which he donates 10 percent of Curves' profits. You may do with this information what you will.

I vow to start using a bike for most of my transportation needs. Actually I've been doing that since Gulf War I but it's the thought that counts. It's really not that difficult. I can ride my bike 50 miles and barely get winded, and still smoke my two packs of cigarettes a day

27. Nice plan! Here's mine:
I'm going to fly to Texas. And then I'm going to stand outside of Exxon Mobil holding protest signs until they let me talk to their chicken-necked fat ass piece of shit they have for a CEO, Lee Raymond and I'm just going to keep asking why we're paying so much money for gas. That's it.

Oh and I plan to get the answer to that question BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
