7. That phrase has grated on my nerves from day one |
|
As Dobbs pointed out, it's disrespectful to the idea of work -- ANY WORK -- being honorable. Smacks of New England prep school privileged silver-foot-in-his-mouth ruling class arrogance and reveals his attitude that ANY job is beneath him (unless he can get his daddy's buddies to pull the strings behind the scenes).

always talk about Americans in the "third person?" It's like THEY are telling us what we need to think about?
Like..."THEY" aren't really involved. They NEVER SAY...."We Americans" or "those of us in America," because They (MSM) are pulling down multi-million salaries like their "STAR" Catie" and before her "Barbara Walters"/Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Bob Schiefer" and the ones before them who only made a "mil or two."
:puke:
They set themselves up as "We the People" while they rake it in like the Oil Industry Dudes and the rest of the Corporate WHORES!!!!

20. It bothers me far less from a journalist than a politician. |
|
Journalists and commentaters are, at least purportedly, observers and, as such, often speak in the third person to portray detachment. Politicians who speak in the third person regarding "Americans" put my teeth on edge. Particularly Junior, needless to say.

27. I disagree...the "Media" has become "involved in the issues" and like |
|
sports commentators one can always kind of figure out "which team" the commentator is "rooting for."
And...given that the "Telecommunications Act of '06" gave TOTAL CONTROL to the Dobbs and the rest...it does make us wonder how folks who make MILLIONS like CEO'S of Corporations can still be counted on to GIVE AMERICANS a FAIR VIEW of the News.
What's Dobb's CNN Salary....and if it compares with any DU'ers then I want those DU'ers to speak up.

10. It's funny how money is only an incentive for RICH people. |
|
Sure, you gotta throw tax breaks and huge salaries and all sorts of bonuses to get the CEO of Exxon to put in a day's work. Take away that extra million so that he only earns ten million this month, and he leaves work after an early lunch.
But no amount of money could get YOU to mow lawns, oh no, you're too preciously lazy and delicate.
Something's not right.

13. All this talk about nonexistent $50-an-hour lettuce-cutting jobs |
|
is another distraction from a rational discussion of the role illegal immigration plays in the economy.
It's not a question whether American people won't do some jobs at any price.
It's not a question of whether employers are willing to pay higher wages.
The real issue here is whether Americans are willing to accept the cost of eliminating illegal immigrant labor and pay more for all goods and services to absorb the cost of higher wages for fellow Americans.
I don't believe Americans are inherently lazy. But we are kind of cheap.

19. Everyone I asked about that $50 an hour job... |
|
Asked me where they could sign up!
These people are so far removed from the middle class.
I worked for a billionaire once who had worked his way through college at Baskin Robbins. I thought maybe, just maybe he would remember what it was like. He did for many years, but a year or so before I left his employment he said something that proved he was henceforth removed. I was looking through a very high-end catalog and I had sighed and said, wow... I'd sure like to have a (whatever it was) like that! He looked confused and asked why I didn't just buy it. There was some sort of disconnect between his knowledge of what he paid me and his idea as to what I could afford to spend. It was kind of freaky.
Money... lots of money does something to people.

I'm just saying I'd do it for $50 an hour! I picked strawberries for a local farmer when I was I kid. I know how hard that work is. Still, for $50 an hour... damn, I could use a few extra spending bucks!

29. A thought about getting wealthier and older... |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 06:12 PM by SlipperySlope
When you are young and starting out, every paycheck is stretched to the limit. Rent, utilities, food, car payments, student loans, credit cards, and so on. You don't have much slack left in your budget.
As time goes on, if you are fortunate, you will start to find slack in your budget. Maybe after a few years you get that old car paid off, and now you have a little extra flash every month. Maybe after a few more years you get one of your credit cards paid off, and now you have just a wee bit more every month.
If you get wealthy enough, and work long enough, eventually you might have all your debts paid off. No credit cards, no mortgage, no student loans. Every penny you make every month can go right to your consumption.
I think that some people fall into the trap of forgetting what it took to get there. When 90% of what you bring home every month is discretionary, you forget about what it was like when ony 5% was.

|
I worked for a major distillery heir... for a year and a half... that was all I could take!
heh!
There is something to be said for making your own money and learning to manage it well.
The first boss I spoke about was a millionaire by the time he was 30 and a billionaire by the time he was 40. He came from very, very humble beginnings... he would have been wise to remember them.

Once we admit that US workers would do it, then we can see if we will pay. Me fifty bucks an hour lettuce....no problem.
