East Coast gas stations face shortages

PHILADELPHIA -- Scattered gas stations from New Hampshire to Virginia are facing temporary shortages as the industry grapples with a transition to more ethanol-blended fuel.

Analysts and industry officials said occasional shortages are possible for another few weeks, though they emphasized that the problem has more to do with delivery schedules than a dearth of fuel. Empty pumps are not nearly as frequent as they were after Hurricane Katrina, which knocked out the electricity needed to run pipelines delivering fuel from the Gulf Coast to the rest of the country.

Talk about bad timing.....

Wouldn't it be cheaper to fly JetBlue and rent a car at the other end?

6. we're driving from Va to Fla in three weeks....
i think the "shortages" are just another industry ploy to let them drive prices even higher. They are topping $3 a gallon here already.

Fortunately, I will get reimbursed for travel expenses as I am moving for a job. Will be interesting to see how seasoned travelers take it on the road.

37.  I haven't been out of my little area much, lately.
From San Antonio where I live, down to Corpus Christi, the highway usually has lots of RVs, with their compact cars in tow, heading to the beach, year round. Maybe not so much this summer, eh?

daughter's graduating from College and we have to bring all of her stuff home. I think it would almost be cheaper to leave it there, fly her home and buy new when she gets home. I'm NOT looking forward to that drive. It's going to kill me every time I have to refuel.

5. Well my dad has a '91 Buick LeSabre
and it runs just fine on ethanol. My old '89 truck did as well. So your Riviera should do just fine.

9. ethanol
Your Buick should be fine, most ethanol blends are only 10% ethanol, and all but a few cars run just fine on it. I've been using 10% ethanol blend in my vehicles for years, mid 70's to early 90's cars and trucks with no problems.

11. Depends on the blend
gasohol, common in the Midwest, is only 10% ethanol and can be used in pretty much any gasoline-powered car. The newer trend in ethanol fuel is E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline); your Buick probably won't take that without some modification.

12. If it was a problem...
there wouldn't be a vehicle on the road in the Midwest. Pretty much all the gas available here has 10% ethanol.

18. My truck HATES ethanol
I'm hoping my mechanic can come up with a fix before I need the truck -- and the fuel supply becomes polluted with crap in the gas.

I HATE corn (can't eat the trash) -- so why wouldn't my truck also get sick eating corn?? <Just kidding>

15. I had to make the decision to use the train to work from now on
It will increase my time of commute. I will have to leave my house at 6 am in the morning and get home by 6 pm in the evening because of the train schedule. With my car, I left at 6 am and got home by 3:30 pm.

My poor doggie will have to hold it in for 2 1/2 hours longer than usual.

17. The truckers organized
a big rally against the last gas hike didn't they? I recall a lot of big trucks showing up in Washington.

And gas was nowhere near where it is now. Those trucks ought to show up by the jillions and literally paralyze Washington DC traffic.

They have the ability and the numbers to do it. Almost 90% of everything transported is by truck and this is killing them guys.

Earlier in the week didn't we hear that gasoline reserves were at high?
They are trying to justify the 30 to 40 cent rise in prices that happened this week. Bullshit price gouging is what I call it.
