UFW releases its own wines (wine's answer to fair-trade coffee)

By MARIA INES ZAMUDIO • The Salinas Californian • April 15, 2008

You can call it wine's answer to fair-trade coffee.

The United Farm Workers union has launched a new wine label, Black Eagle, produced in the Napa Valley by union workers who receive fair wages, said Joaquin Ross, Black Eagle Wines president.

"We wanted to find a way to make the UFW relevant to a younger generation of young Latino professionals," Ross said. "Wine is something that people drink as a community. The idea is that they will open a bottle of wine and celebrate and talk about the UFW's victories."

Ross said the wine represents the progress UFW has made since the days of grape boycotts, which made nationwide headlines 40 years ago.

In Salinas, UFW founder Cesar Chavez was sent to jail for 14 days in 1970 for refusing to obey a court order to stop a boycott against Bud Antle lettuce.

Black Eagle has three types of wines - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc - that are priced about $25 a bottle and are available only online at www.blackeaglewines.com.

2. About $24 for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon -- not a bad deal.
