General Motors Corp.'s Delta Township assembly plant, which builds the hot-selling Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, went on strike this morning over local contract issues.
Although a national contract between GM and the United Auto Workers union was settled last fall, each plant must negotiate a local labor contract. One Delta Township worker told the Lansing State Journal that one issue in the strike is the number of workers at the plant that will be in the lower-tier of a landmark two-tier wage agreement negotiated in the national contract. Under the new wage agreement, "non-core" workers will earn $14 an hour, compared to about $28 an hour for workers who are directly involved in assembling vehicles.
GM also is being affected by a lengthy strike against American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc., a key supplier of axles to GM's trucks and SUVs. And despite GM pumping billions of dollars into bankrupt Delphi Corp., which has been unable to find financing to emerge from bankruptcy. Not good times in Detroit.
