Honouring lost workers

April 23, 2008

No one should die for a job.

That is the message and the reminder the National Day of Mourning highlights on April 28.

With more than 750 workers getting killed each year from work-related incidents, it is a message that needs to be heard.

Between 1993 and 2006, more than 11,000 died while at work — that number doesn’t include the number of injuries.

In 1984, the Canadian Labour Congress started holding the day of mourning and, in 1991, the federal government also began recognizing the day.

With the AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade adopting the National Day of Mourning, the solemn occasion has spread across the planet. More than 80 countries mark the day.

In the West Kootenay, the National Day of Mourning will be celebrated with services held to remember those lost at work.

Nelson has the first memorial service at noon at the worker’s memorial at Lakeside Park. Trail is next starting with a meeting at 3:30 p.m. at the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) 480 hall at 910 Portland Street.
