Buying American-made products should be as popular as supporting our U.S. teams at the Olympics—even if, as Barbara Toncheff tells MSNBC, finding home-grown products sometimes requires a bit of detective work.
Toncheff, along with three other Buy American advocates, is profiled on MSNBC’s website in a recent story on “Pocketbook Patriotism.” As part of the segment, Toncheff made sure she also encouraged consumers to look for the union label—after all, her husband, Nicholas, is a member of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 38 in Cleveland and her son, Steve Glepko, is a member of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 18. Says Toncheff:
My basic goal was to help fellow patriots understand the value of supporting this country and how we are losing the American and union quality I grew up with having our things manufactured overseas for today’s new throw-away society.
It’s not just American and union pride, it’s environmentalism at its best! Remember, there’s no EPA
or labor rights where your goods are now manufactured and fossil fuel is wasted and the air the is polluted while shipping those cheap items to our shores.
Toncheff’s profile is accompanied by a 10-picture slide show, featuring many of the American-made products throughout her home, including some hard-to-find items. The slide show is accompanied by audio commentary from Toncheff.
MSNBC’s Allison Linn writes that the growth in the number of consumers searching for made-in-the-USA products can be traced back to last year’s headlines about imported poison pet food, tainted toys, medicine and candy.
