The newspaper says Qantas today expects to cancel six flights from Sydney and Melbourne, and another 18 are expected to not fly tomorrow. The action is the result of rolling, four-hour-long strikes by aircraft engineers, who certify whether an aircraft is cleared to take off.
The dispute between Qantas and the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association centers over pay. The union wants a 5 percent pay increase, while the airline hasn't budged from its 3 percent offer.
The union's 1,500 members have significant power, the newspaper says. The licensed, highly skilled engineers must go through a number of certifications. The airline has tried to cover for striking engineers with managers.
