Lawmakers start to overturn governor's vetoes

HONOLULU (AP) _ Hawaii's overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature has begun overriding a number of vetoes cast by Republican Governor Lingle.

The measures would reduce her appointment power, restore union negotiation rights and call for a national popular vote for president.

Democrats control more than 80 percent majorities in both the Senate and House. A veto override needs approval of two-thirds of lawmakers in each chamber.

The Senate was successful in overriding five vetoes, and the House overrode six more.

The House took up the Senate overrides late last night. The Senate will handle the remaining veto attempts tomorrow.
