OSHA probing 2 sewer deaths

I start my promotion as a plant operator Monday. It is part of the job. I was one of two injuries at the Papio plant last year. Both injuries could have been much worse. We take refresher safety class every 6 months. I'll be posting this in the morning next to our time clock. Danger lurks in public works.

Associated Press - July 24, 2008 7:55 PM ET

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the case of 2 men who were overcome by sewer gas near Richmond Lake northwest of Aberdeen.

OSHA has six months to finish its investigation. Area Director Bruce Beelman said it likely won't take that long.

Forty-9-year-old Tim Lightfield of Watertown and 19-year-old Ryan Kolden of Clark died Monday as they were working to repair a pipe at a sewer lift station. Authorities have said neither man was wearing protective equipment and that both were overcome by hydrogen sulfide fumes.

Beelman said the investigation will involve interviews and an onsite inspection that includes testing levels of oxygen and other gases at the scene.

1. I just sent that article on to my daughter who works for a county
sewer agency. She'll spread the word to the people she works with. You may have just saved someone's life, Omaha Steve!
