BELFAST (Sep 1): For those who had hoped we would move beyond Swift-boating political smears during this election season, the big-money anti-union ads now running on TV, radio and in newspapers across Maine have trashed any such possibility.
We’re back in the gutter.
The hypocrisy behind these ads is mind-boggling. This is Washington “public relations” at its worst and most dishonest — specifically targeted at Maine. Years ago we would have called it propaganda: Deliberate lies and deception used to sway opinion and bury the truth.
Now it’s just advertising, with a ton of money behind it.
The ads would have you believe the sponsoring groups of companies and organizations wish to save fair and free elections regarding union representation in the workplace, and to preserve the secret ballot.
Therefore, they oppose the Employee Free Choice Act supposedly because it would enable union bosses to intimidate workers into joining their unions simply by signing a card rather than by the secret ballot of a union election.
Phony baloney.
