A Victory For Fairness in Maryland

Pride at Work applauds the decision of the Maryland Court of
Appeals today to throw out a referendum aimed at repealing civil
rights protection for transgender and gender-different residents
of Montgomery County, Maryland.

"This is a huge victory for fairness for all Marylanders," said
Pride at Work Executive Director Jeremy Bishop. "We thank Basic
Rights Montgomery, Equality Maryland, Lambda Legal Defense, the
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and all the other fine
progressive organizations that we worked with to make this
victory possible."

Pride at Work staff devoted hundreds of hours of work to helping
check the petitions submitted by the right-wing group, and
raising funds to pay for a campaign to defeat the referendum if
it had gotten on the ballot.

The court decision means that the energy and resources of LGBT
allies and advocates will not be further drained in fighting off
mean-spirited efforts to roll back our rights.

"We look forward to continued progress toward full equality for
LGBT citizens of Maryland," Bishop added. "This serves notice on
right-wing groups that we will fight their campaign to repeal
LGBT rights with all the resources at our disposal."
