Teamster president James Hoffa rallies union members, Democratic Party faithful in Butte
BUTTE - International Brotherhood of Teamsters President James P. Hoffa rallied labor union and Democratic Party faithful Saturday morning in Butte to vote for presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Hoffa, 67, is head of the 1.4 million-member union and is stumping for Obama across the country. He went door-to-door in Butte with volunteers canvassing neighborhoods for voters and volunteers. He later attended a barbecue at the labor hall on Harrison Avenue before attending a rally in Great Falls Saturday night.

“I want somebody in the White House that doesn’t choke on the word union,’ ” Hoffa told the gathering of about 75 cheering union members. “Barack Obama doesn’t choke on the word union.’ He’s proud that he’s got support of organized labor.”
Hoffa said he’s supporting Obama for his stance on universal health care, tax cuts for the middle class, putting money back into the economy and opposition to right-to-work laws.

“If Barack Obama gets elected, you’re going to see a stronger labor movement, stronger health care benefits and a stronger safety net for workers. That’s going to help everyone, including workers in Butte,” he said.
