November 3, 1943 - A United Mine Workers strike that triggered a U.S. government takeover of the mines ended with a contract providing higher pay and other benefits. The government takeover was done to prevent interruption of production during World War II.

1. In 1943, FDR was president, and Truman was his VP. They were unlike Reagan-Bush or Bush-Cheney.

If the latter two were in charge when this happened, those mine workers would probably be jailed under the logic that they are "aiding and abetting" the enemy during wartime by halting war production.
