Last Minute Effort To Encourage Latino Voters

POSTED: 5:36 pm PST November 3, 2008
UPDATED: 6:58 pm PST November 3, 2008

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Hispanics make up nearly 45 percent of Kern County's population and with less than 24 hours left until election, the United Farmworkers said forming a human billboard was their last-minute effort to promote voting in the Latino community.

Nearly 50 United Farm Workers and supporters gathered at the corner of Niles and Mount Vernon in East Bakersfield.

Their message, according to Armando Elenes of UFW, "We really want to urge everybody in the Latino community to go vote. We have a lot of first-time voters, a lot of people that never voted or haven't voted in a long time."

Arnulfo Galvan, of East Bakersfield, said, "Get out there and vote. Exercise your right to vote on local, state and national politics so you can make a positive change for the Latino community."

The UFW wasn't just urging people to vote tomorrow but also to vote for Fran Flores, the high-speed rail bond, and Sen. Barack Obama.

The UFW and those ABC 23 spoke to said they've seen a major increase in Latino interest in politics recently, and expect a record Latino turnout for tomorrow's election. That's why they're taking advantage of this last chance to encourage as many voters as possible
