Salem -

It was a day that changed Salem forever.

On Nov. 6, 2007, three employees died while repairing a boiler in Salem Harbor Power Station when a pipe burst some 20 feet above them, releasing high-pressure, high-temperature steam.

The political fallout continues to this day, as a grassroots effort ramps up to close the plant and executives insist it is safe today. But workers at the plant weren’t talking about that on Thursday, the one-year anniversary of the blast. They were talking about their three late colleagues, Mark Mansfield of Peabody, Philip Robinson of Beverly and Mathew Indeglia of Lawrence.

Workers from the power plant, its parent company Dominion and the Local IBEW 326 gathered Thursday morning at about 8:15 a.m. for a ceremony that would continue through the exact time when the pipe shattered, taking three lives and altering plant practices permanently. A bell was to be rung in memory of each of the three victims.

The ceremony will be held around a new memorial built by plant workers under the guidance of a landscape designer they hired this year.

“It’s positioned so the sun falls on it at the exact moment of the accident,” said James “Red” Simpson, business manager of the Local IBEW 326.
