An Amazing Election, Thanks to You

After a few days to reflect on a spectacular election day, I want to thank you again personally for your contribution to U.S. Senate candidates through our ActBlue page. Of the 12 races we targeted pitting a pro-worker candidate against a candidate representing Big Business, we already have won six and lost three. In the other three races, Alaska is still too close to call, but looking good for Mark Begich, while Minnesota is in a recount, and Georgia will be decided in a runoff election Dec. 2.

We replaced three incumbent senators who had an average AFL-CIO voting record of 18 percent with candidates who have pledged to be champions for America’s workers. And we won all three open seats that had previously been held by anti-worker Republicans. This is truly remarkable, and we’re ecstatic at this result. The balance of power in the Senate has clearly swung toward pro-working family senators, and they couldn’t have done it without you. Together, you contributed almost $60,000 to these candidates, and your contributions were critical in helping them get out their message of change.

We have many challenges ahead, but the election of Barack Obama as president and these six senators brings us much closer to passing the Employee Free Choice Act, enacting real health care reform and rebuilding our economy for working families. This won’t happen on its own, so I will be asking for your help again soon to help us win these changes and more. But for now, let's take a moment to enjoy what we have accomplished.

In Solidarity,

Karen Ackerman, AFL-CIO Political Director

P.S. If you’re ready to get to work and you’re feeling generous, Jim Martin in Georgia really needs our help to fund his Dec. 2 runoff election against Saxby Chambliss, and Al Franken needs our support to fund his recount effort in Minnesota. Martin and Franken can win both of these races.
