Union linked to Chandler Wal-Mart fight
The Chandler City Council Thursday rejected a proposed shopping center after a group of neighbors protested, claiming there were plans for a Wal-Mart on the site.
Council members voted 4 -3 in favor of the plan, but because of a legal protest, a 6 -1 majority was needed to pass.
The vote came on the same day one of the opposition leaders admitted his campaign had been financed in part by labor unions.
Kirk Sibley, who has led a campaign to fight plans for a Chandler shopping center at the corner of Arizona Avenue and Riggs Road, now says the United Food and Commercial Workers Union paid for some of his mass mailings to local residents.
Sibley would not comment on how much the union has contributed.
The union represents 1.3 million grocery and retail workers nationwide, and has been fighting against Wal-Mart and its subsidiaries for years.
