Rel-UITA, the IUF’s Latin American Regional Office, would like to thank you for lending your support to our International Campaign and for your solidarity with the Sugarcane Cutters of Colombia.

International solidarity played a key role in the resolution of this conflict.

On behalf of the sugarcane cutters of Valle del Cauca and the National Union of Sugarcane Cutters (SINALCORTEROS), it is with joy and pleasure that the IUF would like to thank the 5,164 fellow unionists and activists who over the last weeks gave their support to the international campaign of solidarity with this emblematic struggle.

Your message was sent to the President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, and to other government authorities, thus exerting international pressure over those responsible for enabling a negotiation between the Union and the companies involved.

We are convinced that your message played a very significant role in the negotiations, as the conflict’s international exposure clearly strengthened the workers’ position.

Such a joint effort has had excellent results. The cane cutters have made great strides in the road towards achieving dignity and quality of life and work. Through their action they have gained respect for their rights and they have greatly consolidated their organization, an instrument of struggle that is a guarantee for achieving more gains in the future.

Today we cannot find a better way to express how we feel and must once again say simply thank you, although we are of the belief that you do not thank the solidarity you receive, you return it.
