Middle class workers thanked government leaders for helping advance union rights on Friday.

The AFL-CIO and "Jobs With Justice" met in South Bend with representatives from Senator Evan Bayh and Congressman Joe Donnelly's office. The groups say they're grateful for support of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The act would create stronger penalties for businesses that violate rules. It would also help with medications and use a signed union card.

Jobs With Justice Chairperson Joseph Carbone says, "Both Evan and Joe live in a fairly conservative state but they understand the family is the basic unit of their constituency."

If passed in the Senate, it would amend the National Labor Relations Act.
