GM To Cut 47,000 Jobs As UAW Reaches "Tentative Understanding" With Detroit Three - 02/18/09

By Doug Cunningham

The UAW says it’s reached a “tentative understanding” with GM, Chrysler and Ford on modifications to the 2007 national agreements.. The union says the changes it’s agreed to will help the U.S. automakers face the extraordinarily difficult economic climate they face. GM told the government Tuesday it needs more than $16 billion in additional help and plans to close more factories and wipe out 47,000 more jobs worldwide. The UAW says talks are continuing with GM on financing of the health care trust for retirees.
