WASHINGTON — Appointing a labor union leader as secretary of Labor would be "a great idea'' Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said yesterday, stopping short of a promise made by Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico to appoint a union official if he is elected president.
"I think we should really consider that,'' Clinton responded cautiously under questioning by NBC newsman Chris Matthews at a presidential candidates forum sponsored by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the nation's largest public employees union.
Clinton, Richardson, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio each took turns taking questions from Matthews on Iraq and labor issues before a lively audience of union members who will eventually decide on endorsing a candidate prior to next year's Democratic primaries.
All of the candidates support the Employee Free Choice Act, proposed legislation that would require an employer to recognize a union if a majority of workers signed cards asking for representation.
The bill recently passed the House and is expected to come up in the Senate soon, although it doesn't have enough votes to overcome a filibuster. And even if it did, President Bush has vowed to veto it.
Edwards went a step further, saying that as president he who would tell Americans "why unions matter in America" and "how collective bargaining built the middle class in America.''
