TEGUCIGALPA, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The Honduras Middle-School Teachers Union (Copemh) began a strike on Monday to support the government of ousted President Manuel Zelaya, who was forced into exile by the military on Sunday, the union's president said.
Alongside the strike, teachers will hold rallies in Honduras capital Tegucigalpa and place barricades across major roads all over the country, Copemh President Eulogio Chavez told the media.
"We are not going to allow Roberto Micheletti to usurp the constitutional president, Manuel Zelaya, who was elected by all Hondurans," Chavez said. "We are demanding his immediate restitution and we will be in the streets until it is achieved."
He added that the teachers only recognized Zelaya, known by his nickname Mel, as president and that Sunday's events were completely illegal.
In a move widely condemned by world leaders, nations and multilateral organizations, soldiers seized Zelaya at his official residence on Sunday, just hours before a planned non-binding referendum on forming a constitutional assembly was due to begin. They forced Zelaya to board an aircraft to Costa Rica, where he was received as an official guest by President Oscar Arias.
Roberto Micheletti, who was appointed interim president by Honduras' legislature, declared martial law for 48 hours starting on Sunday night, and also replaced five ministers in Zelaya's cabinet.
On Sunday night, sacked presidency minister Enrique Flores Lanza announced peaceful civil resistance measures seeking Zelaya's return to office.
