OSHA: Fatal Accident Involved Forklift, Not Crane

WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio -- An accident yesterday, July 15, at Appleton Paper in West Carrollton involved a piece of equipment that fell from a forklift, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigation.

William Wilson, 39, died yesterday at Miami Valley Hospital after his leg was trapped under the beam around 10:45 a.m. According to OSHA, the accident didn't involve a fallen crane, as initially reported.

A spreader bar (pictured below) is a heavy piece of equipment that hangs from a crane or a forklift. Emergency crews did say they had to use a crane to lift the bar off of Wilson.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. OSHA said it could take more than two weeks to find a cause.

Appleton Paper is located at 1030 West Alex-Bell Road along Interstate 75. The plant had been shut down this week for equipment maintenance.
