Tropicana Latest Target of AC Union

A casino where large-scale job cuts have rocked the staff is the latest target of a drive to unionize dealers here.

The United Auto Workers filed paperwork Wednesday seeking to represent dealers at the Tropicana Casino and Resort. New owners have been on a cost-cutting drive since acquiring the casino in January.

According to the state Casino Control Commission, there were 3,787 employees at the Tropicana as of July 2, compared with 4,507 on Jan. 2, a decline of 720.

"Tropicana dealers have joined the thousands of other Atlantic City dealers who feel strongly about the benefits of belonging to a union," said Joe Ashton, the UAW's regional director for New Jersey, Pennsylvania and upstate New York.
