Ohio town party axed because of union involvement (local business leaders weren't happy)

Associated Press, 07.21.09, 05:54 PM EDT

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The mayor of a northwest Ohio town says a community celebration is being canceled because local business leaders weren't happy that the event was being organized by union leaders.

Findlay mayor Pete Sehnert says he didn't realize there was so much animosity between unions and companies in the town.

Union leaders say the event planned for this coming weekend wasn't intended to be a labor event.

The event was to include a parade along with food and entertainment.

Findlay's mayor says that the city is mainly a non-union, Republican area and that most of the speakers lined up were Democrats and union people.

He says the city will try to hold the event next year without organized labor's help.

2. The first story in the paper a few days ago
said nothing about Unions. It only talked about how the Chamber of Commerce(now called Findlayinc) thought it was a danger to "free trade" to promote local products. There was a firestorm in the LTTE the next day and it is now organized labor. The big 3 of Findlay, Copper tires, Whirlpool and Marathon usually donated to all city events, but not this time because of the Chamber. They don't want to limit the buying of cheap overseas labor. Folks started thinking that if it's all about "cheap", we shouldn't buy from the big 3 of Findlay if you could buy the same thing for a penny less from a China company. Like tires and gas from BP. Local farm producers should be real happy too.
