Workers United Wins Landmark National Labor Relations Board Decision

http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayReleaseContent.aspx?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-22-2009/0005064443&EDATE=

NEW YORK, July 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Yesterday in Washington DC, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) upheld the dismissal of a petition filed by California-based Royal Laundry challenging Workers United's role as its workers' union. Based on this decision, the NLRB General Counsel will begin issuing complaints against Royal and other employers across the U.S. who have failed to bargain with, to process grievances and arbitrations with, provide access to and to remit dues to Workers United affiliates.

Royal Laundry contested Workers United Local 75's status at the South San Francisco industrial laundry after another union also claimed to be workers' bargaining agent. Royal ceased contract negotiations with Local 75, denied union representatives access to the workplace, withheld union dues, and refused to process workers' grievances--including grievances over the termination of two employees and the suspension of another.

"Management wanted me to be scared and to stop representing my coworkers. This affects me very much because I'm losing hours from work, and who will pay me?" said Clelia Paredes after she was suspended. Paredes is a Royal Worker and union shop steward with Workers United Local 75.

Workers United has filed charges with the NLRB claiming that Ms. Paredes was suspended and two of her coworkers were unjustly fired for speaking out for better jobs.
