MINNEAPOLIS - I had the good fortune to be able to travel to Washington, D.C. earlier this month to attend the swearing-in ceremony of our newest U.S. Senator, Al Franken.
Later that evening, Franken was honored at a reception at the AFL-CIO’s national headquarters. He spoke briefly and announced that — just 30 minutes before — he had signed on as a co-sponsor for a bill for the first time: the Employee Free Choice Act. The room full of union supporters went wild!
Franken’s choice to make the Employee Free Choice Act the first bill he co-sponsored says a lot about who he is and the kind of Senator he will be.
The Employee Free Choice Act is the legislation that would make it easier for workers to join unions and bargain collectively for better wages and benefits. The bill is the labor movement’s top priority.
Franken’s support for the Employee Free Choice Act during the 2008 campaign made him one of the top targets for defeat by a massive television ad campaign funded by big business and anti-union front groups. But Franken didn’t back down.
He didn’t back down then and, despite the close election, he didn’t back down now in his support for labor.
