EAST STROUDSBURG — State AFL-CIO President Bill George, two state representatives and a Monroe County commissioner are expected at a rally today for employees of Pocono Medical Center.

The 4 p.m. event at Dansbury Park on Day Street will highlight efforts by 500 service and maintenance workers at the East Stroudsburg hospital to negotiate their first contract.

A majority of those workers voted last December to be represented by Service Employees International Union 1199P. SEIU is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. Union representatives and hospital management have had nine bargaining sessions.

The 4 p.m. rally is part of a Pocono Medical Center employee picnic, open to the public, schedule from noon to 6 p.m. State Reps. Mario Scavello, R-176, and John Siptroth, D-189, are expected to join the state AFL-CIO president, along with Commissioner Suzanne McCool, union officials said.

The union said it proposed 40 additional bargaining dates with management this summer, but management only agreed to four new sessions.
