An ex-federal corrections officer from Granite City, Ill., was given 21 months in prison and ordered to pay $180,000 in restitution for defrauding a union.
Don Padgett, the former secretary, treasurer and chief financial officer of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1304, was convicted of mail fraud, said A. Courtney Cox, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.
He issued unauthorized checks to himself, made unauthorized purchases on the union’s credit card, falsified information in the union’s financial reports and falsified reports filed with the Department of Labor, prosecutors said.
Padgett misappropriated $185,000 of union funds over seven years, prosecutors said.
AFGE Local 1304’s members consist of correctional officers at the Federal Correctional Institution in Greenville, Ill.
