Union leaders took time to honor the role women played in the UAW's founding Monday at UAW Region 1-C on Atherton Road in Flint.

About 200 UAW members, local dignitaries and original sitdown strikers spent Labor Day unveiling two monuments that celebrate women in the UAW and the UAW as a whole.

One monument contains the glass and framing from the old Fisher Body plant.

It symbolizes the sacrifices women made to live a better life.

Original sitdowners told stories of what it was like to be part of such an event.

UAW Region 1-C director Duane Zuckschwerdt said several UAW locals in Genesee County helped raise funds for the project.
