Beware of Virgin America! |

Beware of Virgin America! Dear CWA member
Virgin America, under the veiled leadership of Richard Branson and former Delta Airlines Executive Fred Reid, are going after legacy carriers like United and American. Branson has publicly stated that unions are too strong. Legacy carrier employees receive "hard-won" benefits that helped make them part of our middle class. The Department of Transportation allowed certification of Virgin America after continuous objections that Branson was not meeting foreign-ownership limitations set by US law. For your aviation sisters and brothers, Virgin America represents the potential loss of standards labor has been able to establish as part of our once-friendly skies. Virgin America is linked to a larger company that operates out of countries where universal health care is already established. The introduction of an uneven playing field is obvious here and Sir Richard knows it.
Your not patronizing this upstart low-fare carrier will mean a lot to us. Your Association of Flight Attendants-CWA sisters and brothers have fought hard against the foreign ownership ("sabotage") of U.S. airlines flying in the highly coveted U.S. domestic market. The Bush Administration favors the allowance of foreign-ownership within our domestic market. A foreign-owned airline operating in the U.S. would control the movement of aircraft and crews. Bush has demonstrated the same ignorance with this issue as he did with his past attempt to allow a foreign-based (from the Middle East) operation that would provide security for our ports.
Thank you for your support and consideration.
In Solidarity,
Stan Kiino
