Unemployment in Detroit is at nightmarish levels. Officially it’s 27 percent. But Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the real joblessness among Detroit workers is near 50 percent. According to the 2008 U.S. Census an estimated 48.5 percent of Detroit men between 20 and 64 didn’t have jobs.

That really is scary, 50%. How are people surviving? The Great Depression, a living history museum; playing now in Detroit, Michigan.

2. I'm not sure why, but Detroit seems to be one of the few...

major cities that hasn't been able to get over the problem of the flight out to the 'burbs of just about everyone with a decent job. It's not about race any more, just about having the bucks to get out.

Haven't been to Detroit, but I have been to Camden, NJ, and saw the same thing-- one of the few places I've ever been where I started to think the best idea was to build a wall around it and condemn the whole city.
